Reverse osmosis with no plumbing, certified by IAPMO R&T for fluoride, lead, PFOA/PFOS, arsenic and nitrate. If you’d rather plumb one in, the Waterdrop G3P800 and APEC RO-90 are our under-sink picks.
The catch: It needs a power outlet and makes half a gallon at a time, so a big family will run several batches a day.

Our seven picks in detail
What each system is certified for, who certifies it, and who it suits.
AquaTru Carafe
One of the broadest certified claim lists we've seen, including fluoride and arsenic, with no plumbing. It needs an outlet and makes half a gallon at a time, and its filters work out to about $0.33 a gallon at AquaTru's prices.
AquaTru Classic
The same certified reverse osmosis claim list as the Carafe in a bigger countertop unit, about a gallon per batch. It needs a power outlet, and filters cost about $130 a year.
Waterdrop G3P800
Tankless reverse osmosis with certified lead, fluoride and PFOA/PFOS reduction from its own faucet. It needs a power outlet under the sink, and filters cost about $160 a year.
APEC RO-90
One of the broadest certified claim lists in under-sink RO, including lead, fluoride and arsenic V, and filters cost about $60 to $75 a year. No PFAS claim and no mineral stage.
Aquasana SmartFlow RO
One of the most broadly certified under-sink RO systems we've checked, with minerals added back. The cost is the carbon blocks: $91.99 every 6 months or 250 gallons, plus the remineralizer and a yearly membrane.
Culligan Aquasential RO
One of the broadest certified claim lists we've seen, installed and serviced by a local dealer. There's no public price, and the claims depend on the configuration, so ask for the tank model with the Total Defense cartridge.
iSpring RCC7AK-BN
The cheapest fully certified under-sink reverse osmosis we found, with an alkaline stage that adds minerals back. Check the model: only the -BN and -BLK versions are certified for lead and fluoride. Filters run about $100 to $140 a year.
Which systems didn’t make the list?
- APEC ROES-50 and ROES-PH75. WQA certifies them for dissolved solids (TDS) only. Filters are cheap, but lead and fluoride aren’t on their certification. Our ROES-50 review.
- Home Master TMAFC-ERP. Remineralized water and about 1:1 waste, but we found no system certification at NSF International, IAPMO R&T or WQA. Our Home Master review.
- Plain iSpring RCC7AK. NSF International lists it for TDS only. The RCC7AK-BN and -BLK carry the lead and fluoride claims.
- Culligan Aquasential Tankless RO. WQA certifies the Tankless versions for TDS only; the tank models carry the full list.
- Aquasana OptimH2O. Discontinued; the SmartFlow replaces it. Owners’ guide and filters.
- Bluevua RO100ROPOT-Lite. Budget countertop RO certified by WQA for lead and TDS, but not fluoride. See our countertop filter guide.
- Waterdrop K19, M6 and B1. IAPMO R&T certifies these countertop units for TDS only.
How do you choose a reverse osmosis system?
Countertop or under-sink?
Countertop units like the AquaTru need no plumbing, just an outlet, but make water in batches. Under-sink systems need a faucet hole and a drain connection, and give you filtered water on tap. The G3P800 is tankless and needs power under the sink.
Check the exact model
Certification is model-specific. The plain iSpring RCC7AK is certified for TDS only while the -BN and -BLK carry lead and fluoride. Culligan’s Tankless models are certified for TDS only, and its PFAS claim needs the Total Defense cartridge.
Count the running cost
Filter costs range from about $60 to $75 a year (APEC RO-90) to roughly $250 a year (Aquasana SmartFlow). The AquaTru Classic works out to about $0.17 a gallon and the Carafe about $0.33.
PFAS and minerals
For certified PFAS reduction, choose the AquaTru, Waterdrop G3P800, Aquasana SmartFlow or Culligan (with the right cartridge). The SmartFlow and iSpring add minerals back, which some people prefer for taste.
Common questions
What’s the best reverse osmosis system?
Our top pick is the AquaTru Carafe, certified by IAPMO R&T for fluoride, lead, PFOA/PFOS, arsenic and nitrate with no plumbing. Under the sink, the Waterdrop G3P800 is tankless and certified for PFOA/PFOS, and the APEC RO-90 has cheap filters and certified arsenic V.
Which reverse osmosis systems are certified for PFAS?
The AquaTru Carafe and Classic and the Waterdrop G3P800 (IAPMO R&T) and the Aquasana SmartFlow (WQA) are certified for PFOA and PFOS. The Culligan Aquasential is certified by WQA for Total PFAS with its Total Defense cartridge. The APEC RO-90 and iSpring aren’t certified for PFAS. See our PFAS guide.
Do all reverse osmosis systems remove fluoride?
Reverse osmosis generally reduces fluoride, but certification varies. All seven picks here are certified for it. The APEC ROES-50 and plain iSpring RCC7AK aren’t. See our fluoride guide.
Can I get reverse osmosis without plumbing?
Yes. The AquaTru Carafe and Classic sit on the counter and plug into an outlet. You fill a tank by hand.
Is a professionally installed system worth it?
If you want a dealer to fit and service it, the Culligan Aquasential has a broad certified list, but no public price. DIY systems like the SmartFlow carry similar claims at published prices.
