How We Rank
Every score on this site comes from the same transparent process, built on certified performance and real-world evidence, not marketing claims or who pays the most.
Most “best water filter” lists are ranked by commission rates, not performance. We do the opposite: we score filters on what they’re proven to do, publish the criteria openly, and lock in the score before any purchase link is ever added.
Our scoring philosophy
A water filter has one job: to remove what’s actually in your water. So the single most important question we ask of any product is not “how popular is it?” but “what is it independently certified to reduce, and by how much?” Everything else, cost, convenience, speed, is weighed against that.
We are not a testing lab, and we don’t claim to be. Instead, we synthesize the evidence that already exists and is verifiable: NSF/ANSI certification listings, manufacturer test data, published research, product specifications, and the experiences of verified owners. Where a claim can’t be sourced, we don’t score it.
What we score
Each filter earns a score out of 5, built from five weighted criteria. Contaminant reduction carries the most weight, because it’s the reason to buy a filter at all.
- Contaminant reduction (40%): what the filter is certified to remove and by what percentage, verified against NSF/ANSI standards.
- Value for money (20%): the protection you get relative to the upfront price and the ongoing cost of replacement filters.
- Filter life and cost per gallon (15%): how long each filter lasts and what it actually costs to run over a year.
- Ease of setup (15%): installation type and what owners report about getting it running, from no-install countertop units to plumbed systems.
- Flow rate (10%): how quickly it delivers water, drawn from published flow specs and real-world owner feedback.
The role of certifications
Certification is the backbone of our scoring. A brand can print “reduces lead” on any box, but an NSF/ANSI listing means an independent body verified that a specific model reduces a specific contaminant to a specific level. We check the actual certification listing for every product, and we tell you which standard each claim is certified against, whether that’s NSF/ANSI 42, 53, 58, 401, or P473.
If it isn’t certified, we don’t credit it. An uncertified “removes 99% of contaminants” claim earns no points for contaminant reduction, no matter how confident the marketing sounds.
What owners report
Certifications tell you what a filter can do in a lab; owners tell you how it behaves in a real kitchen. On every review we summarize verified customer reviews to surface the recurring strengths and complaints that spec sheets miss, things like how often a reservoir needs refilling or whether filter changes are actually as simple as promised. We report the patterns we see, positive and negative, and never cherry-pick.
How we stay independent
Our recommendations are based on evidence, not on which products pay the most. To keep it that way:
- No brand can pay for a review, a higher score, or a placement in our rankings.
- Our scoring happens before we add any purchase links.
- When a product underperforms, we say so, even when it’s one we could earn a commission on.
- We cite the source behind every performance claim, so you can verify it yourself.

How we keep reviews current
Certifications get updated, prices move, and regulations change, so a review is only as good as its last check. We revisit our reviews and rankings periodically and after any significant change, such as a new EPA rule or a product losing or gaining a certification, and we date-stamp what we publish so you can see how current it is.
What the scores mean
Scores run from 1 to 5. As a rough guide: 4.5 and above is a filter we’d confidently recommend to most people in its category; 4.0 to 4.4 is a strong option with a specific trade-off or two; 3.5 to 3.9 is a reasonable pick for the right buyer; and anything below 3.5 has meaningful limitations we think you should know about before buying. A high score in one category never rescues a filter that fails the one that matters most: certified contaminant reduction.
