Best Countertop Water Filters (2026): No Plumbing Needed

Five plug-in filters that sit on the counter, each certified for lead. Reverse osmosis models also cut fluoride, and carbon models keep minerals and waste no water.

AquaTru Carafe countertop reverse osmosis system
4.6Our score
Our top pick

Countertop reverse osmosis certified by IAPMO R&T for fluoride, lead, PFOA/PFOS, arsenic and nitrate, with no plumbing. Filtered water collects in a glass carafe.

The catch: It needs a power outlet and makes half a gallon at a time, so a family will run several batches a day.

Our five picks in detail

What each filter is certified for, who certifies it, and who it suits.

AquaTru Carafe countertop reverse osmosis system
4.6 / 5
Best overall

AquaTru Carafe

Countertop reverse osmosis, 0.5 gal glass carafe
Certified by IAPMO R&T (models AT100 to AT140) to NSF/ANSI 58 for fluoride, lead, arsenic, nitrate, chromium-6 and TDS; NSF/ANSI 53 for PFOA/PFOS; NSF/ANSI 42 for chlorine and chloramine; and NSF/ANSI 401 for microplastics.

One of the broadest certified claim lists we've seen, including fluoride and arsenic, with no plumbing. It needs an outlet and makes half a gallon at a time, and its filters work out to about $0.33 a gallon at AquaTru's prices.

AquaTru Classic countertop reverse osmosis system
4.5 / 5
Best for families

AquaTru Classic

Countertop reverse osmosis
Certified by IAPMO R&T to NSF/ANSI 58 for lead, fluoride, arsenic V, nitrate/nitrite and TDS; NSF/ANSI 53 for PFOA, PFOS and VOCs; NSF/ANSI 42 for chlorine and chloramine; and NSF/ANSI 401 for 15 compounds and microplastics.

The same certified reverse osmosis claim list as the Carafe in a bigger countertop unit, about a gallon per batch. It needs a power outlet, and filters cost about $130 a year.

Aquasana Clean Water Machine countertop water filter
4.3 / 5
Best without wastewater

Aquasana Clean Water Machine

Plug-in countertop carbon filter, 64 oz tank
Certified by WQA (model AQ-CWM2): NSF/ANSI 53 for lead, PFOA/PFOS, mercury, asbestos, cysts, MTBE and VOCs; NSF/ANSI 401 for microplastics and 15 other compounds; NSF/ANSI 42 for chlorine and chloramine. 300 gallons per AQ-CWM2-R filter.

Certified for lead, PFOA/PFOS and microplastics with no wastewater, and Aquasana says it fills an 8-ounce glass in about 8 seconds. It doesn't reduce fluoride or dissolved solids, which takes reverse osmosis. Filters run about $0.12 a gallon in a 2-pack.

Bluevua RO100ROPOT-Lite countertop reverse osmosis system
3.8 / 5
Budget reverse osmosis

Bluevua ROPOT-Lite

Countertop reverse osmosis, glass carafe
Certified by WQA to NSF/ANSI 58 for lead, cadmium, TDS and trivalent chromium, for the RO100ROPOT-Lite only. The Lite (UV) and the full RO100ROPOT aren't certified for lead. No chlorine certification; its fluoride and PFAS figures are Bluevua's own.

Reverse osmosis for about $210, with certified lead and dissolved-solids reduction. Bluevua gives no gallon rating for its $80 yearly filter, and its fluoride and PFAS figures are its own. Buy the plain Lite: the UV version isn't certified for lead.

3.7 / 5
Easiest to use

Brita Hub

Plug-in countertop carbon dispenser, 12 cups
Certified by WQA (models 87340, 87341, 87344): NSF/ANSI 53 for lead and mercury, NSF/ANSI 42 for chlorine and chloramine. IAPMO R&T certifies it to NSF/ANSI 53 for VOCs (W-13905). WQA also certifies it to NSF/ANSI 401 for microplastics.

Fill it and press a button: 12- and 20-ounce presets, no plumbing. The filter is small at 120 gallons, about $0.23 a gallon, and there's no PFAS claim. Sold by Brita rather than Amazon; replacement filters are on Amazon.

Which countertop filters didn’t make the list?

  • Waterdrop K19, M6 and B1. IAPMO R&T certifies these countertop reverse osmosis units for dissolved solids (TDS) only. Their lead, fluoride and PFAS figures aren’t certified.
  • Waterdrop A1. We didn’t find it in Waterdrop’s IAPMO R&T reverse osmosis listings.
  • SimPure Y7P. NSF International lists its membrane for material safety only, with no reduction claims.
  • Frizzlife, iSpring RCD100, APEC countertop RO and NU Aqua. We found no listing for these countertop systems on NSF International’s directory.
  • Under-sink reverse osmosis such as the APEC RO-90 and Aquasana SmartFlow. See our reverse osmosis guide.
  • Gravity filters such as Berkey and the Culligan MaxClear need no power. See our gravity filter guide.

How do you choose a countertop water filter?

Reverse osmosis or carbon?

Reverse osmosis reduces fluoride, arsenic and dissolved solids, which carbon can’t, but it sends some water back as waste and strips minerals. Carbon keeps minerals and wastes nothing, and the best carbon units are certified for lead and PFOA/PFOS.

Check the exact model

Certifications are model-specific. The Bluevua Lite is certified for lead, but its UV version and the bigger RO100ROPOT aren’t. AquaTru’s Carafe and Classic are certified separately, and their filters don’t swap.

Count the cost per gallon

Filter costs here run from about $0.12 a gallon (Aquasana) to $0.33 (AquaTru Carafe) at the makers’ prices. Smaller filters, like the Brita Hub’s 120 gallons, mean more frequent changes.

Plan for power and space

All five plug in. The Carafe and Bluevua make half a gallon or so per batch; the Classic and Aquasana hold more. Measure under your cabinets before you buy.

Common questions

What’s the best countertop water filter?

Our top pick is the AquaTru Carafe, certified by IAPMO R&T for fluoride, lead, PFOA/PFOS and arsenic with no plumbing. For bigger batches, the AquaTru Classic. Without reverse osmosis or wastewater, the Aquasana Clean Water Machine is certified by WQA for lead and PFOA/PFOS.

Which countertop filters remove fluoride?

The AquaTru Carafe and Classic, both certified by IAPMO R&T under NSF/ANSI 58. The Aquasana, Brita Hub and Bluevua aren’t certified for fluoride. See our fluoride guide.

Which countertop filters remove PFAS?

The AquaTru Carafe and Classic (IAPMO R&T) and the Aquasana Clean Water Machine (WQA) are certified for PFOA and PFOS under NSF/ANSI 53. The Brita Hub has no PFAS claim, and the Bluevua’s PFAS figures are its own. See our PFAS guide.

Do countertop filters need plumbing?

None of these five does. You fill a tank by hand and plug the unit in. Faucet-connected countertop units exist, but none we checked is certified for contaminant reduction.

How much water does countertop reverse osmosis waste?

AquaTru rates the Classic at about 3 parts filtered water to 1 part waste and gives the Carafe a 63% efficiency rating; the rejected water stays in the tap tank, not down a drain. Carbon filters like the Aquasana and Brita Hub waste none.
