AquaTru Carafe countertop reverse osmosis system
4.6Our score
Our top pick

The best water filter for apartments is one you can set up without touching the plumbing, and the AquaTru Carafe is the most broadly certified we found: countertop reverse osmosis certified by IAPMO R&T for lead, fluoride, arsenic, nitrate, and PFOA/PFOS. It plugs in, fills at the tap, and moves with you.

The catch: It needs counter space and an outlet, and costs more up front than a pitcher.

The short answer

A water filter for an apartment shouldn’t need tools, drilling, or your landlord’s permission. All six picks below sit on the counter or in the fridge, and each is certified for lead by NSF International, IAPMO R&T, or WQA. Choose by what else your water needs and how much counter space you have.

Our six picks in detail

AquaTru Carafe countertop reverse osmosis system
4.6 / 5
Best overall

AquaTru Carafe

Countertop reverse osmosis, 0.5 gal glass carafe
Certified by IAPMO R&T (models AT100 to AT140) to NSF/ANSI 58 for fluoride, lead, arsenic, nitrate, chromium-6 and TDS; NSF/ANSI 53 for PFOA/PFOS; NSF/ANSI 42 for chlorine and chloramine; and NSF/ANSI 401 for microplastics.

One of the broadest certified claim lists we've seen, including fluoride and arsenic, with no plumbing. It needs an outlet and makes half a gallon at a time, and its filters work out to about $0.33 a gallon at AquaTru's prices.

Aquasana Clean Water Machine countertop water filter
4.3 / 5
Best countertop, no wastewater

Aquasana Clean Water Machine

Plug-in countertop carbon filter, 64 oz tank
Certified by WQA (model AQ-CWM2): NSF/ANSI 53 for lead, PFOA/PFOS, mercury, asbestos, cysts, MTBE and VOCs; NSF/ANSI 401 for microplastics and 15 other compounds; NSF/ANSI 42 for chlorine and chloramine. 300 gallons per AQ-CWM2-R filter.

Certified for lead, PFOA/PFOS and microplastics with no wastewater, and Aquasana says it fills an 8-ounce glass in about 8 seconds. It doesn't reduce fluoride or dissolved solids, which takes reverse osmosis. Filters run about $0.12 a gallon in a 2-pack.

Culligan ZeroWater 10-cup pitcher
4.2 / 5
Best pitcher, adds fluoride

Culligan ZeroWater

10-cup pitcher
Certified by IAPMO R&T to NSF/ANSI 42, 53 and 401 for fluoride, Total PFAS, lead, chromium-6, mercury, nitrate and 13 NSF/ANSI 401 compounds. Certified for 20 gallons per filter.

One of few pitchers with certified fluoride reduction, plus Total PFAS. Filters cost $0.68 to $0.93 a gallon and run out faster on hard water.

Waterdrop ED01 electric countertop water filter dispenser
4.1 / 5
Best small dispenser

Waterdrop ED01

Electric gravity dispenser, 15 cups, USB-C rechargeable
Certified by IAPMO R&T with the WD-EDF filter: NSF/ANSI 53 for lead, mercury and VOCs (W-14270), NSF/ANSI 401 for microplastics and 15 other compounds (W-14513), and NSF/ANSI 42 for chlorine (W-14269). 200 gallons per filter. Its PFOA/PFOS figure is Waterdrop's claim.

Our highest score here: certified lead reduction for about $40, with filters at roughly $0.08 a gallon in a 3-pack. It's small, though: 15 cups at a time, pumped out by a rechargeable battery. Buy the ED01, not the ED01A, which uses a different filter certified for chlorine only.

Brita Pacifica pitcher with Elite filter
4.1 / 5
Cheapest certified for lead

Brita Elite

Pacifica 10-cup pitcher with the Elite filter
Certified for lead with the Elite filter (OB06) by IAPMO R&T in 11 Brita pitchers (W-13905), by WQA, and by NSF International in the Pacifica and Tidal. WQA also certifies it for mercury, cadmium and chlorine, and to NSF/ANSI 401 for microplastics in most Brita pitchers (not the Tahoe). Brita's PFOA/PFOS claim isn't listed by any of the three. 120 gallons per filter.

Certified lead reduction in most Brita pitchers and a 120-gallon filter, at about $0.14 a gallon. No fluoride, TDS or certified PFAS claim.

PUR PLUS water filter pitcher
4.0 / 5
Best pitcher, adds Total PFAS

PUR PLUS Pitcher

7- and 11-cup pitchers
Certified by IAPMO R&T to NSF/ANSI 42, 53 and 401 for lead, Total PFAS and microplastics, with the PUR PLUS filter only. 40 gallons per filter.

Certified lead and Total PFAS reduction for about $0.25 a gallon with a 3-pack of filters. You change it every 40 gallons, and owners say it slows as it fills.

Which format fits your apartment?

Countertop reverse osmosis

The broadest certified claims, including fluoride and arsenic, with no plumbing. Needs an outlet and counter space.

Countertop carbon

No wastewater, and Aquasana says its Clean Water Machine fills a glass in about 8 seconds. Certified for lead and PFOA/PFOS, but not fluoride.

Pitchers and dispensers

The cheapest and smallest. They live in the fridge, filter slowly, and need filter changes more often.

Under-sink systems

Usually need drilling or plumbing changes, so check your lease first. If you can install one, see our under-sink guide.

Do older apartment buildings need a filter for lead?

Lead usually comes from service lines and plumbing on the way to your tap, not from the treatment plant, so the age of your building’s pipes matters. The EPA says lead service lines are typically the biggest source where they exist, and brass faucets and lead solder are common sources where they don’t. Ask your landlord or utility whether your building has a lead service line, and see our lead filter guide.

Common questions

What is the best water filter for an apartment?

The AquaTru Carafe, for most renters: countertop reverse osmosis certified by IAPMO R&T for lead, fluoride, arsenic, nitrate, and PFOA/PFOS, with no installation. On a tight budget, the Brita Elite pitcher is certified for lead.

Can I install an under-sink filter in a rental?

Only with your landlord’s permission in most leases, since it usually means drilling the counter or changing the plumbing. Countertop systems and pitchers need neither.

Do faucet-mount filters work in apartments?

They need no tools, but they don’t fit pull-down or pull-out faucets, and we haven’t yet checked the certifications for the popular models. The six picks here are all certified for lead.

Which apartment filter removes PFAS?

The AquaTru Carafe and Aquasana Clean Water Machine are certified for PFOA/PFOS, and the PUR PLUS and Culligan ZeroWater pitchers for Total PFAS. See our PFAS filter guide.

Can I take the filter with me when I move?

Yes. All six are freestanding. Bring the filter, and replace the cartridge if it’s near its rated capacity.
