Hard water is water high in dissolved calcium and magnesium. It’s a nuisance, scale on fixtures, spotty dishes, soap that won’t lather, dry-feeling skin, not a health risk, and there’s no EPA limit for it. The most important thing to know: a drinking-water filter does not soften water. The real fixes are a whole-house softener, which removes the minerals, or a salt-free conditioner, which stops scale without removing them.

Hard water simply means water with a high content of dissolved minerals, chiefly calcium and magnesium, picked up as water moves through limestone, chalk, and gypsum underground. It’s extremely common: most of the United States has moderately hard to very hard water. Hardness is measured in grains per gallon (gpg) or milligrams per liter (mg/L), where one grain per gallon equals about 17.1 mg/L.

Is hard water bad for you?
For your health, no. Hard water poses no established health risk, which is why the EPA sets no limit for it and the World Health Organization has declined to issue a health-based guideline. The calcium and magnesium in it are harmless to drink and are the same minerals you’d get from food, and some research even points to a modest cardiovascular benefit from the magnesium, though the evidence is inconclusive. Hard water is a practical nuisance, not a contaminant in the health sense.
The one health-adjacent thing to know cuts the other way: softening water with a traditional salt-based system adds a little sodium to it, roughly 7.5 mg per liter for each grain per gallon of hardness removed. For most people that’s negligible, but on very hard water or a low-sodium diet it’s a reason to consider a potassium-based softener, keep one unsoftened tap for drinking, or use reverse osmosis for drinking water.
What hard water actually costs you
If it isn’t a health issue, why treat it? Because the minerals precipitate out as limescale, and that quietly costs you money and hassle around the house:
- Scale in appliances. It coats water-heater elements, dishwashers, and coffee makers, cutting their efficiency and shortening their life.
- Soap that won’t lather. Minerals bind with soap, so you use more of it and get soap scum on tubs, tiles, and glass.
- Spots and film on dishes, glassware, and fixtures after they dry.
- Dry-feeling skin and dull hair, a common cosmetic complaint from the mineral residue left behind.
How to actually fix hard water
This is the part people get wrong: an ordinary water filter, carbon or otherwise, does essentially nothing for hardness. Softening is a different job that needs different equipment. Here are the real options.

A salt-based softener is the true fix: it runs water through a resin that swaps calcium and magnesium for a little sodium, giving you slippery soft water, better lather, and real protection for your plumbing and appliances. A salt-free conditioner doesn’t remove the minerals at all; it crystallizes them so they can’t stick as scale. It uses no salt, sodium, electricity, or wastewater, which makes it low-maintenance and eco-friendly, but the water still “feels” hard and it’s less effective on very hard supplies. Reverse osmosis removes hardness beautifully, but only at the tap it’s plumbed to, so it’s a drinking-water answer, not a whole-house one.

How to tell if you have hard water

- Look for the signs: white crust on faucets and kettles, soap scum, spotty glasses, and skin that feels filmy or dry after washing.
- Use a hardness test strip (a few dollars) to get your grains-per-gallon number, which determines whether a salt-free conditioner will be enough.
- Check your utility’s report or the USGS hardness map for your area to see where you stand.
