Most water filter advice online is written to sell you something. We started DrinkingWaterFilter.com to do the opposite: to judge filters on the evidence, tell you plainly when something doesn’t work, and make the whole confusing category easier to navigate.
Why we exist
The water filtration market is full of bold claims and short on proof. Brands say their products “reduce contaminants” without saying which ones, by how much, or whether any independent body verified it. Meanwhile the contaminants that matter, from lead and PFAS to nitrates and disinfection byproducts, are invisible, and the rules around them are complex and changing.
Our job is to close that gap. We translate NSF/ANSI certifications, EPA regulations, and lab data into plain-English guidance so you can spend once on a filter that actually solves your problem, instead of guessing.
How we rank
Every recommendation on this site is built on the same principles:
- We rank filters on certified performance: what a product is proven to reduce, verified against NSF/ANSI standards, not what its packaging claims.
- We cite the source behind every performance claim, so you can check it yourself.
- We weigh what real owners report, summarizing verified customer reviews to surface the recurring strengths and complaints that specs alone don’t capture.
- When a filter underperforms, we say so, even one we could earn a commission on.
- Our scoring happens before we ever add a purchase link. No brand can pay for a review, a higher score, or a placement.
