Best Under-Sink Water Filters (2026): Reverse Osmosis and Carbon, Tested

An under-sink filter is the sweet spot for most kitchens: filtered water on demand, hidden in the cabinet, with far more power than a pitcher and none of the whole-house cost. We scored every under-sink system we've reviewed, reverse osmosis and carbon alike, to match the right one to your water, not the highest commission.

The short version

The big fork is reverse osmosis versus carbon. RO removes the most, fluoride and dissolved solids included, but needs a drain and wastes some water. Certified carbon keeps your minerals, wastes nothing, and costs less, but only removes what it’s certified for. Those are our three picks above; the full field is ranked below.

Buying guide

How to choose an under-sink filter

Two decisions do most of the work: reverse osmosis or carbon, and what your water actually needs. Get your utility’s annual report or a home test first, then match the filter to the result.

Reverse osmosis or carbon?

Reverse osmosis removes the widest range, fluoride, arsenic, and total dissolved solids included, but needs a drain, wastes some water, and strips minerals (the best systems add them back). Certified carbon keeps minerals, wastes nothing, flows at full pressure, and costs less, but only removes what it is certified for.

What to check before you buy

Confirm the system is certified for your target contaminant, not just “tested.” Decide tank versus tankless (space and flow), and whether you will DIY the faucet and drain connection or hire a plumber. Then weigh running cost: cheap filters that change twice a year can cost more than a pricier annual set.

FAQ

Common questions

What’s the best under-sink water filter?

For most kitchens, the Waterdrop G3P800 is our top overall pick: a tankless reverse-osmosis system with strong flow and NSF/ANSI 58 certification. If you want the most protection per dollar, the Epic Smart Shield is the best value, and the Home Master TMAFC-ERP makes the best-tasting RO water by adding minerals back.

Do I need reverse osmosis, or is an under-sink carbon filter enough?

It depends on your water. Carbon handles chlorine, taste, and, when certified, lead and PFAS, while keeping your minerals and wasting no water. Only reverse osmosis reliably removes fluoride, arsenic, and total dissolved solids. If fluoride or TDS is your concern, choose RO; if it is chlorine, taste, or certified lead and PFAS, a carbon system like the Aquasana AQ-5300+ is simpler and cheaper.

Can I install an under-sink filter myself?

Usually yes. Carbon systems that use your existing faucet are the easiest, often 15 minutes with no drilling. Reverse-osmosis systems add a dedicated faucet and a drain connection, which a confident DIYer can do in one to two hours, though many people hire a plumber. Tankless RO units are the tidiest because there is no bulky storage tank.

How much does an under-sink filter cost to run?

Budget for replacement filters, not just the upfront price. Carbon systems and efficient RO units run roughly $60 to $130 a year; the priciest systems here are closer to $180 to $400 a year. A cheaper unit that needs filters twice a year can cost more over time than a pricier one with an annual set, so check the filter life before you buy.

Do under-sink filters remove PFAS, lead, and fluoride?

Only if certified for them. Our reverse-osmosis picks and the certified carbon systems reduce lead and PFAS, and RO adds fluoride and TDS. Always confirm the specific certification rather than assuming. See our PFAS guide, lead guide, and fluoride guide for the certified shortlist.
