PFAS are a family of thousands of synthetic compounds, the “forever chemicals”, and almost every filter sold to remove them says it is “PFAS certified.” Under NSF/ANSI 53 that phrase covers two different claims, and the gap between them is wide. We checked nine brands against the certifier databases to sort out which is which.

Both get advertised as PFAS certification. They are not the same claim, and no product listing we found explains the difference. Filter life cuts the other way: the broadest claims come with the shortest certified capacities.
Total PFAS and PFOA/PFOS are not the same certification
First, the thing being filtered. PFAS stands for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, a family of thousands of synthetic compounds used since the 1940s in non-stick cookware, waterproof fabrics, food packaging and firefighting foam. They are called forever chemicals because the carbon-fluorine bond holding them together barely breaks down, so they accumulate in water, soil and people. PFAS reduction is certified under NSF/ANSI 53, the health effects standard. That standard offers two separate PFAS claims and a manufacturer chooses which to certify against.
PFOA and PFOS covers two specific compounds. They are the two the EPA regulates and the two most commonly found, so it is a meaningful claim. It is also a narrow one: PFAS is a family of thousands of compounds and this claim speaks to two of them.
Total PFAS is the broader claim, verified against a wider set. Where a certificate says Total PFAS, the product has been tested and audited against more of the class than a PFOA and PFOS listing covers.
You cannot tell them apart from a product page. AquaTru’s certificate says PFOA and PFOS. ZeroWater’s says Total PFAS. Both are sold as PFAS filters, both are genuinely certified, and the difference only appears when you open the file.
One brand carries both. Hydroviv’s certificate lists fifteen configurations. Two carry Total PFAS, seven carry PFOA and PFOS, and six carry no PFAS claim at all. Which one you receive depends on the cartridge they build for your address.
What the EPA has actually proposed
PFAS regulation moved in 2026 and the coverage has been confusing, so here is the position as of September 2026. Both changes are proposed. Neither is final.
On 18 May 2026 the EPA announced two proposed rules, published in the Federal Register on 20 May. The first upholds the maximum contaminant levels for PFOA and PFOS at 4 parts per trillion each, and adds an option for water systems to request two additional years to comply, moving the deadline from 26 April 2029 to 26 April 2031. Systems at or above 12 parts per trillion that take the extension would have to run interim control measures in the meantime.
The second would rescind the limits for PFHxS, PFNA, GenX (HFPO-DA), and the Hazard Index mixture of those three plus PFBS. The EPA’s stated reason is procedural: it says it proposed and finalised those determinations simultaneously in 2024 rather than sequentially as the Safe Drinking Water Act requires.
The comment period closed on 20 July 2026 and the EPA has said it intends to take final action on the rescission during 2026. Initial monitoring by public water systems is still due by 2027.
What that means for a household: the two limits most people have heard of are staying, the deadline for utilities to meet them may move to 2031, four other limits may be withdrawn, and none of it is settled. What is certified for PFAS, and what is not

Searched by brand and by company name in the NSF listings database and the IAPMO R&T product listing directory on 7 September 2026. Certificates are frequently held under a manufacturer’s legal name rather than the brand, so a brand-name search alone will miss listings. Epic files as Epic Life Inc., and ZeroWater and Hydroviv both file under Culligan addresses.
The filters certified for PFAS
Hydroviv Under Sink Water Filter
On paper this is the broadest certified claim set of anything we checked. Total PFAS rather than the narrower pair, at 500 gallons, with lead, cysts, turbidity and microplastics alongside it, in a system that fits under a sink and does not need reverse osmosis.
There is an important caveat and it is not a small one. Hydroviv builds the cartridge to match your address, and its certificate covers fifteen configurations: two with Total PFAS, seven with PFOA and PFOS only, and six with no PFAS claim. Hydroviv’s own product page advertises PFOA and PFOS rather than Total PFAS. If the broader claim is why you are buying, confirm with them which cartridge your water report produces before you order.

Culligan ZeroWater
The only pitcher we found anywhere with a certified Total PFAS claim, and the claim list around it is unusually wide for the format. Fluoride and hexavalent chromium in particular are rare on a pitcher, and the whole thing costs less than a single replacement cartridge for most of the systems on this page.
The trade-off is filter life. Twenty gallons is roughly ten days for a household drinking two gallons a day, against 500 for the Hydroviv and 600 for the larger AquaTru. Certified performance is real; the running cost is what you are paying for it. Our ZeroWater review covers how that works out in practice.
AquaTru
The narrower PFAS claim, and by far the longest certified life. Where ZeroWater gives you 20 gallons and the gravity options 50, AquaTru’s countertop models run to 600. If PFOA and PFOS are what your water report flags, this is the sensible answer.
Two things worth knowing. AquaTru’s lead and fluoride certifications sit on its NSF/ANSI 58 reverse osmosis file rather than the 53 file, alongside arsenic, uranium on the ATU200, radium, perchlorate and nitrate, so the full picture spans two certificates. Culligan MaxClear
Total PFAS with no outlet and no plumbing, which nothing else here offers. For off-grid homes, RVs and emergency supplies that is the whole argument, and the claim set around it is broad.
Fifty gallons per filter is short, and the certification was established in Culligan’s own Venture and Scout systems with this element as the named component, so dropping it into a Berkey housing sits outside what the certificate covers. Our gravity filter guide works through that.
ProOne Big+, three filters
The same PFAS claim as MaxClear, with the advantage that you are buying the certified system rather than fitting an element into another maker’s housing. Three filters triples the certified capacity without changing the certification.
ProOne is being brought under the Culligan MaxClear brand, so this is the outgoing line. The certificates remain active and stock remains available, but it is worth knowing before you commit.
Does reverse osmosis remove PFAS?
Generally yes, and it is almost never certified for it. This is the single most misunderstood thing about PFAS filtration, and the reason is structural.
Reverse osmosis systems are certified under NSF/ANSI 58, and that standard contains no PFAS claim at all. Its list covers arsenic, barium, cadmium, chromium, copper, cyst, fluoride, lead, nitrate, radium, selenium, TDS and turbidity. A system can therefore be fully certified to 58, with an impeccable listing, and hold no certified PFAS claim whatsoever, because there is nothing to certify against in that standard.
To claim PFAS, a reverse osmosis maker has to take out a separate NSF/ANSI 53 certification. AquaTru does, which is why it appears here. Most do not, which is why our reverse osmosis guide ranks systems on the claims they actually carry rather than on the technology.
The practical upshot: if a reverse osmosis listing tells you it removes PFAS and cites only an NSF/ANSI 58 certification, that claim is the manufacturer’s, not a certifier’s.
Match the claim to your situation
Your water report names PFOA or PFOS
Those are the two the EPA regulates, and AquaTru’s certification covers them at 300 to 600 gallons. A PFOA and PFOS claim answers the question your report is actually asking.
You want the broadest coverage
Total PFAS is the wider claim. Hydroviv covers it on two configurations, ZeroWater on all ten pitcher models, MaxClear and ProOne in gravity systems.
Budget matters more than filter life
ZeroWater gives you Total PFAS plus lead, fluoride and six more contaminants for the price of a pitcher. Twenty gallons per filter is the cost of that, so factor in the cartridges.
No power and no plumbing
Culligan MaxClear and ProOne both carry Total PFAS in gravity systems. Nothing else certified for PFAS works without an outlet or a connection.
Common questions
What is the best water filter for PFAS?
It depends which claim you need. For the broadest certified coverage, Hydroviv’s under-sink system carries Total PFAS at 500 gallons, though you should confirm which cartridge they build for your address. For a pitcher, Culligan ZeroWater is the only one we found certified for Total PFAS. For the longest filter life, AquaTru is certified for PFOA and PFOS at up to 600 gallons.
What is the difference between Total PFAS and PFOA/PFOS certification?
They are two separate elective claims under NSF/ANSI 53. PFOA and PFOS covers those two compounds specifically, which are the two the EPA regulates. Total PFAS is verified against a broader set of the class. Both are genuine certifications and both get marketed as “PFAS certified,” so read the reduction claims on the certificate rather than the standard number.
Does reverse osmosis remove PFAS?
Reverse osmosis membranes reject PFAS effectively, but NSF/ANSI 58, the standard reverse osmosis systems are certified to, contains no PFAS claim at all. A maker has to take out a separate NSF/ANSI 53 certification to make one. AquaTru has. Most have not, so most reverse osmosis PFAS claims are the manufacturer’s own.
Did the EPA weaken the PFAS rules in 2026?
Two changes are proposed and neither is final. The limits for PFOA and PFOS stay at 4 parts per trillion each, with an option for water systems to take two extra years, moving the deadline from April 2029 to April 2031. Separately, the EPA has proposed rescinding the limits for PFHxS, PFNA, GenX and the Hazard Index mixture, on procedural grounds. The comment period closed on 20 July 2026 and the EPA intends to take final action during 2026.
Do Brita or Clearly Filtered remove PFAS?
Neither holds a certified PFAS claim. Brita’s pitchers are certified for lead reduction only, and Clearly Filtered holds NSF/ANSI 42 for chlorine and taste and NSF/ANSI/CAN 372 for lead-free materials, with its wider claims coming from its own lab testing. Testing is not the same as certification, though it is not nothing either.
How do I check a PFAS claim myself?
Search the model number in the certifier’s database, NSF or IAPMO R&T, and read the reduction claims column under NSF/ANSI 53. Search by company as well as brand name. Our NSF certification guide explains what each standard verifies.
