Certified Where Berkey Never Was, Priced Where Almost Nobody Will Want It
Gravity filters have had the same hole in the middle of them for years. People buy a stainless countertop unit to get lead and PFAS out of their water, and the reduction figures they are shown come from the manufacturer’s own lab work rather than an independent certification. Our Big Berkey review comes down to exactly that gap.
Culligan with MaxClear Technology is the first gravity system we have found that closes it. The filter is certified by IAPMO R&T against NSF/ANSI 42, 53 and 401, plus NSF/ANSI/CAN 372 for lead-free materials. That covers lead at 99.2%, Total PFAS at 99.6%, chloramine at 99.6%, and microplastics at 96.5%. Total PFAS is a broader claim than the PFOA and PFOS pair most certified filters stop at, and almost nothing in the gravity category holds any of this.
Then you read the performance data sheet. The certified service life of one filter is 50 gallons. Not 500, not 3,000: fifty. Culligan separately markets the filter as lasting up to six months, and those two numbers describe very different products.
At Home Depot’s price of $128 for a two-pack, certified water from this system costs about $1.28 a gallon. That is roughly eight times what a certified AquaTru costs to run and more than twenty times a good carbon pitcher. It is more than most bottled water by the case.
Best for: current Berkey, ProOne, or Boroux owners who want certified lead and PFAS reduction without replacing the housing they already own, and who use the system lightly enough that a 50-gallon filter is not absurd. If you filter water for a family every day, the running cost will not survive contact with your budget.

This is not a camping or emergency purifier. Amazon listings push the Scout and Venture for camping and emergency preparedness, but Culligan’s own data sheet states the device is intended only for potable water and should not be used on water that is microbiologically unsafe or of unknown quality without disinfection. It holds no microbiological certification. If you need to treat stream, lake, or well water for pathogens, this is the wrong product.
The 50-Gallon Problem
Culligan’s data sheet is unambiguous: rated service life is 50 gallons for one filter, 100 for two, and 150 for three. At that point Culligan recommends replacement. The marketing on the same product says up to six months per filter.
Both statements can be technically true, because a manufacturer chooses the rated capacity it certifies to, and a conservative rating is cheaper and easier to certify. But it means the two numbers are answering different questions. Fifty gallons is how far the certified performance is guaranteed. Six months is how long Culligan expects the filter to keep working acceptably, which is not the same promise.
The gap is large. Culligan lists the service flow rate as 4.0 gallons per day. Run the system anywhere near that and a filter reaches its certified capacity in under two weeks, not six months. Six months only works out if your household draws roughly a quart a day through it.

Single filters list at $78.98, which works out to about $1.58 a gallon. Comparison figures are from our own reviews of each product. If you stretch a filter to six months of light use instead of replacing it at 50 gallons, your cost per gallon falls, but you are running past the point where the certification applies, which is the reason to buy this filter in the first place.
A three-filter Venture changed on Culligan’s own six-month schedule is roughly $384 a year in cartridges. That is more than we calculated for the dealer-serviced Culligan reverse osmosis system, which removes considerably more.

Is Culligan MaxClear NSF certified?
It is certified to NSF/ANSI standards, but by IAPMO R&T rather than by NSF International. That is a real, independent, ANSI-accredited certification and it counts. The standards are NSF/ANSI 42 for chlorine and chloramine, NSF/ANSI 53 for lead and Total PFAS, NSF/ANSI 401 for microplastics, pharmaceuticals, and pesticides, plus NSF/ANSI/CAN 372 for lead-free materials. It is the only gravity filter we cover that holds certification for lead and PFAS.
Do MaxClear filters really fit a Berkey?
Yes. The filters are 7 inches tall and are built to fit most upright gravity housings, including Berkey, ProOne, Boroux, British Berkefeld, Doulton, Alexapure, Aquacera, Patriot Pure, Purewell, and Waterdrop. For a Big Berkey owner this is currently the only way to get independently certified lead and PFAS reduction without buying a new system. Confirm your housing takes a 7-inch upright element before ordering.
How long do the filters actually last?
This is the question to be careful about. Culligan’s certified rated service life is 50 gallons per filter, and the data sheet recommends replacement at that point. Culligan’s marketing separately says up to six months. If you rely on the certified lead and PFAS reduction, 50 gallons is the number that matters, and at typical household use that is a few weeks, not half a year.
Does MaxClear remove fluoride?

Is this the same thing as ProOne?
Effectively, it is the replacement for it. Culligan brought ProOne into its own filtration line and says ProOne products will be sold only while existing stock lasts, after which they are superseded by Culligan with MaxClear Technology. If you own a ProOne system, MaxClear filters are the forward path Culligan is pointing you toward.
MaxClear or a certified countertop system?
If you already own a gravity housing and want it certified, buy the filters. If you are starting from scratch and mainly want proven lead and PFAS removal, a countertop reverse osmosis unit like the AquaTru Carafe covers far more contaminants for around a tenth of the running cost, and it also needs no plumbing. Gravity only wins if you specifically need to operate without power or a tap.
Should You Buy It?
Buy the MaxClear filters if you already own a Berkey, ProOne, or similar gravity housing and the missing certification has been bothering you. That is a real problem this product solves, and no one else solves it. Certified 99.2% lead and 99.6% Total PFAS reduction in a gravity element is a first, and Culligan deserves credit for going and getting it.
Do not buy the whole system as your main household filter without doing the arithmetic. Fifty certified gallons at $64 a filter is roughly $1.28 a gallon, the highest running cost of anything we have reviewed, and the six-month marketing claim does not change what the certification actually covers. It also leaves out fluoride, arsenic, nitrate, and pathogens, and moves about four gallons a day.
