Best Water Filter Pitchers (2026): Tested and Ranked

A filter pitcher is the cheapest, simplest way to improve your water, but a $25 jug and a $99 jug are not doing the same job. We scored every pitcher we've reviewed so you can match the right one to your water, not the loudest marketing.

PUR PLUS

Certified lead and microplastic reduction for about thirty dollars. Fit the PLUS filter, change it often, and it punches above its price.

The short version

The gap between pitchers is bigger than their price gap. A couple remove almost everything, ZeroWater strips dissolved solids to zero and Clearly Filtered takes on PFAS and even fluoride, while most only handle chlorine, taste, and, when certified, lead. Match the pitcher to what your water actually needs. Those are our three picks above; the full field is ranked below.

How they compare

Every pitcher we’ve reviewed, ranked by our overall 5-point score. The fluoride column is the clearest divide: only ZeroWater’s ion exchange and the lab-tested Clearly Filtered take it on.

Best overall

ZeroWater

Ion-exchange pitcher

The pitcher that removes the most, taking TDS to near zero, with NSF 42 and 53 for lead, chromium, and PFAS. Filters cost more and clog faster, but nothing else in a jug matches it.

Best for PFAS

Clearly Filtered

Affinity carbon pitcher

The rare pitcher that genuinely takes on fluoride, and the broadest removal of anything in a jug, PFAS and lead included, while keeping beneficial minerals. Health claims are lab-tested to NSF methods rather than certified, and the filters are not cheap.

PUR PLUS

Carbon + ion-exchange pitcher

Certified lead reduction for about thirty dollars. Just fit the PLUS lead-reduction filter, and expect to change it often. Also certified for microplastics.

Best for well water

Epic Nano

Nanofiber ultrafiltration

The rare pitcher that physically strains bacteria, viruses, and cysts, which makes it a genuine option for well or untreated water. Slow pour and a short, pricey filter life are the trade-offs.

Best design

Waterdrop Chubby

Carbon pitcher

The best-looking pitcher we cover, with a 200-gallon filter life about five times a Brita’s. Certified for chlorine and taste only, so treat it as a taste pitcher, not a lead or PFAS one.

Brita Elite

Carbon pitcher

The one everyone knows, and the Elite filter is the only Brita certified for lead. Cheap to buy and available everywhere, though the filters need changing every couple of months.

How to choose a water filter pitcher

A pitcher is the easiest entry to filtered water, but the gap between models is real. Two things decide it: what your water needs, and whether the pitcher is actually certified to do it.

What a pitcher can and can’t do

The right pitcher is great for chlorine, taste, and, when certified, lead. What most cannot do is fluoride or high dissolved solids, ZeroWater is the exception, via ion exchange, but its filter exhausts fast. Pitchers also pour slowly. If you need fluoride or broad removal on tap, step up to under-sink or countertop.

Check the certification, not the claim

Plenty of pitchers say “reduces lead” without certification behind it. The ones that back it up are the Brita Elite, PUR’s lead-reduction filter, ZeroWater, and the lab-tested Clearly Filtered. Then weigh filter cost and life, a cheap pitcher with pricey, short-lived filters can cost more over a year, plus pour speed and whether it keeps minerals.

FAQ

Common questions

What’s the best water filter pitcher?

For the most removed, the ZeroWater is our top pick, taking dissolved solids to near zero. If fluoride and PFAS are your concern, the Clearly Filtered removes the widest range while keeping minerals. On a budget, the PUR PLUS gives you certified lead reduction for around thirty dollars.

Do pitcher filters remove fluoride?

Most do not. The main exception is the Clearly Filtered, which is lab-tested for fluoride, and the ZeroWater, which reduces it through ion exchange, though that filter exhausts quickly. If reliable fluoride removal is your goal, a reverse-osmosis system is the surer route. See our fluoride guide.

Do pitchers remove lead and PFAS?

Only the certified ones. For lead, trust the Brita Elite, PUR’s lead-reduction filter, ZeroWater, or the lab-tested Clearly Filtered. For PFAS, the ZeroWater and Clearly Filtered are the strongest pitcher options. Always check the specific certification rather than a general “reduces” claim. Our PFAS guide and lead guide cover the shortlist.

How often do I change a pitcher filter?

It varies a lot. Brita and PUR run roughly two months or 40 gallons; ZeroWater changes faster and tells you via its TDS meter; the Clearly Filtered lasts about four months or 100 gallons; and the Waterdrop Chubby stretches to around 200 gallons. Factor that running cost in, since it often matters more than the sticker price. See how often to change your filter.

Are water filter pitchers worth it?

For chlorine, taste, and certified lead at low cost, yes, they are the cheapest way to noticeably improve tap water and need no installation. What they are not is a whole-home or fluoride solution. If you need broad removal on tap or filtered water at every faucet, look at our under-sink and whole-house options instead.
