Certified by IAPMO R&T to NSF/ANSI 42, 53, 58 and 401 for fluoride, PFOA/PFOS, lead, arsenic and more, in a countertop unit that collects into glass.
The catch: It makes half a gallon at a time, and it needs a power outlet.

Our verdict
The AquaTru Carafe pairs four-stage reverse osmosis with a countertop setup that needs no plumbing. That combination is rare. It’s certified by IAPMO R&T for fluoride, PFOA/PFOS, lead, arsenic, nitrate and chromium-6, which most filters this easy to set up can’t match. AquaTru puts the total at 84 contaminants.
Two things temper that. It’s a powered appliance you fill and empty by hand, not a set-and-forget filter. And the glass carafe holds half a gallon, which suits one or two people but means repeated batches for a family. If you want the widest certified removal without touching your plumbing, it’s the filter we point people to first.
You want RO-level certified removal, including fluoride and PFOA/PFOS, without plumbing, and you have a free outlet on the counter.
You need a lot of water at once for a big household, or you only need chlorine taste removed and want to spend far less.
How it scored
Contaminant reduction carries the most weight in the overall score. How we score filters
What it removes
These are certified reduction figures from AquaTru’s Carafe performance data sheet, with the NSF/ANSI standard each claim is certified under.

| PFOA / PFOS | 99% average | NSF/ANSI 53 |

| Arsenic (V) | 98.8% | NSF/ANSI 58 |
| Nitrate | 98.3% | NSF/ANSI 58 |
| Chromium-6 | 97.5% | NSF/ANSI 58 |
| Copper | 96.8% | NSF/ANSI 58 |
| Radium | 96.4% | NSF/ANSI 58 |
| Cysts | 99.9% | NSF/ANSI 58 |
| Total dissolved solids | 94.4% | NSF/ANSI 58 |
| Chlorine / chloramine | 96.8% / 96.6% | NSF/ANSI 42 |
| Microplastics | 98.96% | NSF/ANSI 401 |
Certified by IAPMO R&T, not NSF International, so you won’t find it in NSF’s database. It’s also certified to NSF/ANSI 372 for lead-free materials.

Need more water at once? The AquaTru Classic has bigger tanks, but its filters aren’t interchangeable with the Carafe’s.
Common questions
Does it need to be plumbed in?
No. You fill the tap water tank by hand and filtered water collects in the glass carafe. It does need a wall outlet, and AquaTru recommends one with ground-fault protection.
Is it certified for PFAS?
It’s certified by IAPMO R&T to NSF/ANSI 53 for PFOA and PFOS, at a 99% average reduction. That covers those two compounds, not the whole PFAS family. See our PFAS guide.
Why can’t I find AquaTru on the NSF website?
Its certifications are issued by IAPMO R&T, not NSF International. Both certify to the same NSF/ANSI standards, but the listings live in different databases.
How much water does it waste?
Its data sheet gives an efficiency rating of 63%. The rejected water stays in the tap tank rather than going down a drain, so empty and refill the tank instead of topping it up.
Carafe or Classic?
Both use four-stage reverse osmosis. Choose the Carafe for a smaller footprint and a glass vessel, or the Classic for bigger tanks. Their filters aren’t interchangeable.
Which Carafe does this review cover?
The standard Carafe. AquaTru also sells a Carafe Smart version, and either version can come with an Alkaline Mineral Boost final filter. All use the same four-stage reverse osmosis.
The bottom line
If you want the broadest certified removal without hiring a plumber, the AquaTru Carafe is the easiest yes on our list. You pay more upfront and accept an appliance that needs power and refilling, and in return you get certified reverse osmosis collecting into glass. If you only need lead or chlorine handled, a certified pitcher costs far less. See how it ranks in our best drinking water filters guide.
