The short answer
How often to change water filter cartridges depends on the filter: about every 2 months for a standard pitcher filter, 6 months for most fridge and under-sink filters, 6 to 12 months for RO pre-filters, and years for an RO membrane or whole-house tank. Use the maker’s rating in gallons or months, whichever comes first. A filter’s certified claims apply only up to its rated capacity; Brita, for example, says its Stream filter’s performance is not certified after 40 gallons.
How often should you change each type of water filter?
| Filter | Gallons | Time | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brita standard (OB03), Stream, Plus | 40 | About 2 months | Brita |
| Brita Elite (OB06) | 120 | About 6 months | Brita |
| Brita faucet filter | 100 | About 4 months | Brita |
| PUR and PUR PLUS pitcher | 40 | 2 months | PUR |
| PUR PLUS faucet filter | 100 | 3 months | PUR |
| ZeroWater | 15 to 20 certified | When the meter reads 006 | ZeroWater |
| Clearly Filtered pitcher | 100 | 6 months | Clearly Filtered |
| GE fridge (XWFE, RPWFE, MWF) | 170 to 200 | 6 months | GE |
| Whirlpool everydrop | 200 | 6 months | Whirlpool |
| Samsung fridge | 6 months | Samsung | |
| Aquasana Claryum under-sink | 500 to 800 | 6 months | Aquasana |
| RO pre-filters | 6 to 12 months | iSpring, APEC | |
| RO membrane | 2 to 3 years (iSpring); 2 to 5 (APEC, by model) | iSpring, APEC | |
| AquaTru Carafe / Classic | 300 / 600 (carbon) | 6 months carbon, 24 months RO | AquaTru |
| Aquasana Rhino tank | 1,000,000 | Up to 10 years | Aquasana |
| Aquasana Rhino pre-filter | 2 months | Aquasana | |
| SpringWell CF1 media | 1,000,000 | 10 years | SpringWell |
| UV lamp | Every year | VIQUA |

How often should you change a Brita filter?
Every 40 gallons, about 2 months, for the standard white filter; every 120 gallons, about 6 months, for the blue Elite; and every 100 gallons, about 4 months, for the faucet filter. Brita’s pitcher indicator turns yellow at 35 gallons and red at 40 for the standard filter. In pitchers made before 2019, the indicator may not track the Elite’s longer life, so Brita suggests a sticker or reminder (Brita). See what each Brita filter removes.
How often should you change a refrigerator water filter?
Every 6 months for GE, Samsung, and Whirlpool. GE adds 170 to 200 gallons depending on the model, and says to replace sooner if the dispenser or ice maker slows (GE). Whirlpool’s light trips at 200 gallons (Whirlpool); Samsung’s is a 6-month timer (Samsung). Find a certified filter for your fridge with our fridge filter finder.
How often do you change reverse osmosis filters?
Pre-filters every 6 to 12 months and the membrane every 2 to 3 years, says iSpring, which adds to change the membrane sooner if the TDS reading starts rising. APEC gives 2 to 5 years for the membrane, depending on the model, and notes the schedule varies with water quality and use (APEC). AquaTru rates its carbon filters at 6 months and its RO filter at 24 months, whichever limit comes first (AquaTru).
How often do you change a whole-house water filter?
The main carbon tank lasts a long time: Aquasana rates the Rhino at 1,000,000 gallons or up to 10 years, and SpringWell rates the CF1 at 10 years or 1,000,000 gallons. The pre-filters need far more attention: every 2 months on the Rhino and every 6 to 9 months on SpringWell systems. A UV lamp needs replacing every year, even if it still glows (VIQUA).
What happens if you don’t change your water filter?
- It stops working. Over time the filter media fills up, and there’s often no obvious sign (NSF International).
- It can release what it trapped. UGA Extension says a saturated carbon filter can release organics back into the water (UGA).
- Bacteria can grow. Carbon removes the chlorine that limits bacteria, and poorly maintained carbon filters can become breeding grounds for bacteria. The CDC says to maintain filters to prevent germs from growing in them.
How do you know when to change a water filter?
- Slower flow from the pitcher, faucet, or fridge dispenser (NSF, GE).
- Taste or odor comes back (UGA Extension). ZeroWater says an acidic or fishy taste means its filter is spent (ZeroWater).
- The indicator or TDS meter says so: ZeroWater at 006, Brita at red.
- No indicator? The EPA suggests tracking the date or gallons and setting a reminder (EPA).
What should you know when changing a filter?
- Use the right cartridge. NSF International warns that with look-alikes, even the smallest size difference could let water go around the cartridge.
- Wear gloves, and if your immune system is weakened, have someone else change it (CDC).
- Flush after a break. UGA advises flushing pitcher and faucet filters for at least five minutes if unused for more than a few days (UGA).
- Sealed spares don’t expire. Brita, Whirlpool, and ZeroWater all say unopened filters have no expiration date (Brita, Whirlpool, ZeroWater).
Common questions
How often should I change my Brita filter?
Every 40 gallons (about 2 months) for the standard filter, 120 gallons (about 6 months) for the Elite, and 100 gallons (about 4 months) for the faucet filter (Brita).
How often should I change my refrigerator water filter?
Every 6 months for GE, Samsung, and Whirlpool filters, or sooner if the gallon limit or a slow dispenser comes first.
How often do you change reverse osmosis filters?
Pre-filters every 6 to 12 months and the membrane every 2 to 3 years, per iSpring; check your own system’s manual.
What happens if you don’t change your water filter?
It stops reducing contaminants once full, can release trapped organics, and can grow bacteria (NSF International; UGA Extension).
Do unopened water filters expire?
No, according to Brita, Whirlpool, and ZeroWater. Brita suggests soaking a standard filter older than a year for 15 minutes before use.
