Sulfur Smell in Well Water: What Causes It and How to Fix It

The rotten egg smell in well water is hydrogen sulfide gas. Here is how to tell whether it is coming from your water heater, your plumbing, or the well itself, and what each one costs to fix.

The short version

That rotten egg smell is hydrogen sulfide gas, produced by sulfate-reducing bacteria or by the geology your well sits in. Where you smell it tells you almost everything. Hot water only points at your water heater, where a magnesium anode rod drives the reaction, and swapping that rod for an aluminum-zinc one usually ends it for a couple hundred dollars. Hot and cold at every tap means the gas is in the well, and that takes a whole-house oxidizing filter. One fixture only is usually the drain rather than the water. It is a nuisance rather than a health hazard in nearly every case, with one exception worth ruling out first.

Three Checks That Locate the Source

Hydrogen sulfide is produced in three quite different places, and each has a different fix. Before spending anything, find out which one you have:

  • Run the cold tap, then the hot. If only the hot side smells, your well is not the problem and your water heater is. That single split settles most cases.
  • Fill a glass and walk outside with it. Smell it away from the sink. If the water smells fine outdoors but the bathroom reeks, you are smelling bacteria in the drain, not your supply. Pouring the water down a different drain is the same test in reverse.
  • Notice whether the smell fades as the water runs. Strong on first draw and gone after a minute suggests bacteria living in the plumbing or pressure tank. Constant at every tap, hot and cold, points at the aquifer itself.

One more distinction worth making early. A rotten egg smell is hydrogen sulfide. A musty or swampy smell usually means the same gas at lower concentration, below about 1 mg/L. A sewage or septic smell, especially with a shallow well, is a different conversation and belongs in the safety section below.

The Water Heater Fix

Every tank heater contains a sacrificial anode rod, usually magnesium, designed to corrode in place of the steel tank. In water carrying a little sulfate and the right bacteria, that magnesium rod drives the chemical reduction of sulfate into hydrogen sulfide. The tank becomes a small gas generator, and the cold side, which never touches the rod, stays clean.

There are two culprits inside the tank and one test separates them. Raise the thermostat to 140°F for around 48 hours, which kills sulfate-reducing bacteria living in the tank. If the smell disappears, bacteria were the cause. If it survives that, the anode reaction is.

Water at 140°F scalds in seconds. Warn everyone in the house, keep children away from hot taps for the duration, and return the thermostat to its normal setting afterwards. If anyone in the household is elderly, very young, or has reduced sensation, have a plumber run this instead.

The durable fix is replacing the magnesium rod with an aluminum-zinc alloy rod, which protects the tank without feeding the reaction. It is a half-hour job for a confident DIYer, or roughly one to two hundred dollars with a plumber. A powered anode, which protects the tank electrically rather than by dissolving, avoids the reaction entirely and costs more. Flushing and disinfecting the tank clears whatever bacteria are already inside.

What you should not do is simply remove the rod. It exists to stop the tank from corroding, and pulling it will shorten the heater’s life and generally void the warranty. And if the smell continues after a rod swap, the hydrogen sulfide was in your water all along. Heat just made it obvious.

Every tap, hot and cold

When the Smell Is in the Well

Hydrogen sulfide occurs naturally in groundwater, most commonly in wells drilled into acidic bedrock like shale and sandstone, and it is generated by sulfate-reducing bacteria that thrive in the low-oxygen conditions of a well and its plumbing. Those bacteria are not pathogenic. They breathe in sulfate and breathe out sulfide, and they are perfectly happy living in a well casing, a pressure tank, or a neglected softener.

Shock chlorination is the standard reset: a strong chlorine solution circulated through the well, pressure tank, and every line, held long enough to kill the bacteria, then flushed. It works, and it is worth doing. But it is a reset rather than a cure, and if the smell returns within weeks you are dealing with either continuous recolonization or genuine hydrogen sulfide from the aquifer. Both need permanent treatment at the point of entry.

Test for hydrogen sulfide, sulfate, iron, manganese, and pH together. Hydrogen sulfide is awkward to measure because the gas escapes the sample quickly, so use a lab that supplies a preserved bottle or offers a field test. The other numbers decide which system fits and in what order the stages go, and iron nearly always travels with sulfur.

The health question

Is Sulfur Water Safe to Drink?

In ordinary household concentrations, yes. Hydrogen sulfide is not regulated by the EPA in drinking water, and the reasoning is blunt: any concentration high enough to threaten health makes the water far too foul to drink long before you get there. Most people detect it at about 0.5 mg/L. Below 1 mg/L it reads as musty or swampy, and at 1 to 2 mg/L it is unmistakably rotten eggs. Sulfate-reducing and sulfur-oxidizing bacteria carry no known human health risk of their own.

The damage it does is to your house. Above roughly 0.5 mg/L, hydrogen sulfide corrodes iron, steel, copper, and brass in well casings, plumbing, and fixtures, tarnishes silverware, stains laundry and bathroom fixtures yellow or black, and ruins the taste of coffee, tea, and anything cooked in it.

Sulfate is the related concern and it does have a guideline. The EPA’s secondary standard for sulfate is 250 mg/L, set for taste and for its laxative effect. Infants are the sensitive group, since sulfate-driven diarrhea can lead to dehydration, and most people acclimate over time. High sulfate is also what feeds the bacteria producing the smell in the first place.

Rule out sewage before you treat the smell. In shallow or poorly constructed wells near a septic drainfield or a leaky sewer line, hydrogen sulfide can be a sign of sewage reaching the water, which brings coliform bacteria and nitrate with it. If your well is shallow, old, or close to either, test for coliform bacteria and nitrate first. That result changes what you do next.

One genuine but rare hazard: hydrogen sulfide is flammable and toxic as a gas at high concentrations, and it can accumulate in confined spaces such as a sealed pump house or an enclosed well pit. Ventilate before working in one.

Concentration decides the method. This is the one category where buying too much system is as common a mistake as buying too little:

Reverse osmosis is not the tool for this problem. Every treatment path for hydrogen sulfide runs through oxidation, adsorption, or chlorination rather than membranes, which is why an under-sink RO unit is the wrong purchase here even though it is the right one for lead or PFAS.

Can I shower in water that smells like sulfur?

Yes. At household concentrations hydrogen sulfide is an odor and corrosion problem rather than a skin or inhalation risk in a normally ventilated bathroom. It may leave a lingering smell on skin and hair, and it will tarnish fixtures over time, but bathing in it is not the concern.

Why does only my hot water smell?

Because the gas is being made inside the water heater rather than arriving in your supply. The magnesium anode rod reduces sulfate to hydrogen sulfide, and sulfate-reducing bacteria in the warm tank accelerate it. Replacing the rod with an aluminum-zinc one usually ends it. Cold water never touches the rod, which is why it stays clean.

Will a water softener remove the sulfur smell?

No, and it can make things worse. Softeners exchange hardness minerals and do nothing for a dissolved gas, and a poorly maintained softener is a comfortable home for sulfate-reducing bacteria. If your smell started some months after installing one, sanitizing the unit is the first thing to try.

Does the smell mean my well is contaminated with sewage?

Usually not. Hydrogen sulfide is produced by ordinary geology and naturally occurring bacteria, and on its own it is not evidence of sewage. But on a shallow or poorly constructed well near a septic drainfield or sewer line it can be a warning sign, so test for coliform bacteria and nitrate to rule it out before spending money on odor treatment.

Will a Brita or under-sink filter fix it?

Only at the lowest concentrations, and only for that one tap. Activated carbon adsorbs hydrogen sulfide up to roughly 0.3 mg/L, which is below the level most people describe as rotten eggs. Carbon also gives the bacteria a surface to colonize, so cartridges must be changed on schedule. If the whole house smells, this is not the fix.

The smell came back a few months after shock chlorination. Why?

Because chlorination kills the bacteria present without changing the conditions that suited them. Recolonization from the aquifer or from a corner of the plumbing is common, and it is the clearest signal that you need continuous treatment at the point of entry rather than another round of shocking.
