One of the broadest-certified pitchers you can buy for the money, reducing lead, microplastics, and even some pharmaceuticals. It loses points where owners feel it most: filters that clog and slow down, and a short life that means frequent changes.

A certified, lead-reducing pitcher let down by clogging

The PUR PLUS pitcher punches above its price on paper. Fitted with the PUR PLUS Lead Reduction filter, it is certified by the WQA to NSF/ANSI Standards 42, 53, and 401, which is a genuinely broad spread for a gravity pitcher: chlorine taste and odor, lead, mercury, cadmium, copper and zinc, microplastics, and even a handful of pesticides and pharmaceuticals. That is a wider certified list than a standard Brita pitcher, and it is why PUR markets it as reducing “3X more” substances. For a filter that costs around thirty dollars and needs no installation, that is a lot of certified protection.

The catch is living with it. PUR cartridges have a well-earned reputation for clogging: flow is fine when a filter is fresh but slows to a frustrating trickle as it loads up, and the filters are rated for only about 40 gallons or two months, so you replace them often and the running cost adds up. It also does not touch PFAS, fluoride, arsenic, or TDS, the jobs that need reverse osmosis. Judge it as an affordable, lead-certified everyday pitcher and it is a strong pick; just go in knowing the filter maintenance is its weak spot.

Buy the right filter. Lead reduction comes only from the PUR PLUS Lead Reduction filter (model PPF951K). The cheaper basic PUR filter does not remove lead, and the two look almost identical, so check the box before you buy or you will lose the main reason to choose PUR.

Does the PUR PLUS pitcher remove lead?

Yes, but only with the right filter. The PUR PLUS Lead Reduction filter (PPF951K) is WQA-certified to NSF/ANSI 53 for lead. The cheaper basic PUR filter (PPF900Z) is not certified for lead at all, and the two look very similar, so check that the box says “Lead Reduction” before you buy.

PUR PLUS or Brita: which pitcher is better?

The PUR PLUS filter is certified for a broader list of contaminants, adding microplastics and select pharmaceuticals on top of lead. Why does my PUR filter slow down so much?

Clogging is the most common PUR complaint. The dense filter media loads up with sediment and minerals over time, especially on hard or sediment-heavy water, and flow slows as it does. Changing the filter on schedule (every 40 gallons or two months) and rinsing new filters before first use helps, but a tendency to clog is inherent to the design.

Does it remove PFAS or fluoride?
