Buy the AquaTru if you want the widest certified coverage and a filter that lasts. It is certified for lead, fluoride, arsenic, uranium on one model, microplastics and fifteen pharmaceuticals, at 300 to 600 gallons per set of filters.
Buy the ZeroWater if PFAS is your main concern or the budget is tight. It holds the broader Total PFAS certification where AquaTru holds the narrower PFOA and PFOS claim, and it costs about a fifteenth as much. The catch is 20 gallons per filter, roughly ten days for a family.
What each one is actually certified to remove
Both products are certified by IAPMO R&T, and both are certified more thoroughly than most of the market. The differences are specific rather than a matter of one being better.

The PFAS claims are not equivalent
Both products are marketed as PFAS filters and both are genuinely certified, but under NSF/ANSI 53 those are two different elective claims.
ZeroWater is certified for Total PFAS, verified against a wider set of the class. AquaTru is certified for PFOA and PFOS, the two specific compounds the EPA regulates. PFOA and PFOS are the two most commonly found and the two that carry federal limits, so it is a meaningful claim rather than a token one. It is also narrower.
If your water report names PFOA or PFOS, either product answers it. If you want coverage across more of the family, ZeroWater’s certificate is the broader one, and it comes on a $27 pitcher. Our PFAS filter guide sets out how the two claims differ across the whole market.
Coverage, and filter life
Outside PFAS, AquaTru is certified for a great deal more. Arsenic, radium, perchlorate, selenium, barium, copper and TDS all appear on its reverse osmosis certificate, and the ATU200 under-sink model adds uranium. It is also certified for microplastics under NSF/ANSI 401, which ZeroWater is not, despite ZeroWater holding a 401 certificate for thirteen other compounds.
The bigger practical gap is filter life. AquaTru’s countertop models are certified to 600 gallons and the Carafe to 300. ZeroWater is certified to 20. For a household drinking two gallons a day that is roughly ten months against ten days.
That difference does not mean a ZeroWater filter stops working on day eleven. It means the certified claims were verified to 20 gallons, and beyond that you are relying on the manufacturer. Factor the cartridges into the price: the pitcher is cheap, the running cost is not trivial.
Both are certified for lead, under different standards
The table shows both products certified for lead and fluoride, and that is accurate, but they get there differently. ZeroWater’s lead and fluoride claims sit under NSF/ANSI 53, the health effects standard. AquaTru’s sit under NSF/ANSI 58, the reverse osmosis standard.
Both are legitimate certifications issued by the same body against the same kind of scrutiny, and each standard tests in the way appropriate to the technology. What it means practically is that a search of AquaTru’s NSF/ANSI 53 file alone would suggest it holds no lead claim, which is wrong: the claim is on the 58 file. It is an easy mistake to make and we made it ourselves before checking all four certificates.
The lesson for anyone verifying a filter: check every file a company holds, not just the one that matches the standard you expected.
Which one should you buy?
AquaTru
Buy this if you want one device that covers most of what a water report is likely to flag, and you would rather not think about filters for the best part of a year. Four certificates, a dozen certified claims, and 600 gallons on the Classic.

Culligan ZeroWater
Buy this if PFAS is the reason you are filtering, or if the budget will not stretch to a countertop system. The Total PFAS claim is broader than AquaTru’s, and lead, fluoride and hexavalent chromium on a pitcher at this price is genuinely unusual.
Twenty gallons is the price of that. Budget for cartridges, and if you are drinking two gallons a day you will be changing them roughly three times a month. Our ZeroWater review covers how it performs day to day.
There is a case for owning both
They are not really competing products. One is a $27 pitcher, the other a $375 appliance, and between them they cover everything either one misses. A ZeroWater in the fridge for Total PFAS and a AquaTru on the counter for everything else costs less than most single under-sink systems.
If you would rather have one device, the question is simply whether your water report names PFAS specifically. If it does, and it names compounds beyond PFOA and PFOS, ZeroWater’s certificate covers more of them. If it does not, AquaTru covers more of everything else and lasts thirty times longer.

Is AquaTru or ZeroWater better for PFAS?

Both are genuine certifications and PFOA and PFOS are the two compounds the EPA regulates, so AquaTru is not a poor choice; ZeroWater’s claim is simply broader.
Does ZeroWater remove lead and fluoride?

Why does AquaTru cost so much more?
Reverse osmosis hardware, and filter life. AquaTru is certified to 300 or 600 gallons against ZeroWater’s 20, so the cost per certified gallon is far lower even though the purchase price is fifteen times higher. It is also certified for arsenic, radium, perchlorate, microplastics and, on one model, uranium, none of which ZeroWater carries.
How often do you change a ZeroWater filter?
