Iron, sulfur and manganese, on SpringWell’s ratings

An air-injection system for well water, with no chemicals to add. SpringWell rates it for iron up to 7 ppm, hydrogen sulfide up to 8 ppm and manganese up to 1 ppm.

The catch: No certifier we checked lists it, and it isn’t meant to make unsafe well water safe to drink.

Our verdict

The SpringWell WS treats the three most common well-water nuisances: iron staining, the rotten-egg smell of hydrogen sulfide, and manganese. Water passes through a pocket of air at the top of the tank, which oxidizes those dissolved minerals into particles, and a greensand media bed catches them. Each night the system backwashes the particles down a drain and refreshes the air pocket. There are no chemicals to buy.

SpringWell rates it for iron up to 7 ppm, hydrogen sulfide up to 8 ppm and manganese up to 1 ppm, at a pH of 6.5 to 10. Those are SpringWell’s ratings: NSF International, WQA and IAPMO R&T don’t list the WS, which is why it scores at our floor for treatment performance. It needs electricity and a drain. And it treats nuisance minerals, not health risks: it isn’t designed for bacteria, nitrate, arsenic or lead, so test your well before you buy and treat those separately. Our NSF certification guide explains how to check a certifier’s listing yourself.

Your well test shows iron, sulfur or manganese within SpringWell’s limits, and you want them gone at every tap without dosing chemicals.

Skip it if

Your well has bacteria, nitrate or arsenic, or levels above SpringWell’s limits, or you have no drain or outlet near the line.

Common questions

Is the SpringWell WS certified?

Not by any certifier we checked: NSF International, WQA and IAPMO R&T don’t list it. Its iron, hydrogen sulfide and manganese limits are SpringWell’s own ratings.

Does it make well water safe to drink?

No. It treats iron, sulfur and manganese, which are nuisances rather than the main health risks. It isn’t designed for bacteria, nitrate, arsenic or lead. Test your well and treat those separately. See our well water guide.

What if my iron is above 7 ppm?

That’s above SpringWell’s rating, so the WS may not keep up. Check your water test against all three limits and the pH range before you buy.

Does it need electricity?

Yes, for the control head and the nightly backwash, and it needs a drain line for the backwash water.

The bottom line

If a lab test shows iron, sulfur or manganese within SpringWell’s limits, the WS is a chemical-free way to clear them at every tap, on SpringWell’s ratings rather than a certification. It doesn’t make unsafe water safe, so test first and treat bacteria, nitrate or arsenic separately. Start with our well water guide.
