The short answer

How to remove manganese from water depends on how much you have, whether iron is present, and your water’s pH. For small amounts of dissolved manganese, a water softener often works. For combined iron and manganese of 3 to 10 mg/L, Penn State Extension recommends a manganese greensand filter; above 10 mg/L, chemical oxidation (such as chlorine) followed by filtration (Penn State). For drinking and formula water, the WHO rates point-of-use reverse osmosis the most effective household option. Test before you buy anything.

How much manganese in water is too much?

Guideline Level What it’s for
EPA secondary standard 0.05 mg/L Staining and taste; not enforceable (EPA)
WHO provisional guideline 0.08 mg/L Health, based on bottle-fed infants (WHO, 2022)
Minnesota guidance (infants on tap water or formula) 0.1 mg/L Health (MDH)
Health Canada maximum 0.12 mg/L Health, based on infants (Health Canada)
EPA lifetime health advisory 0.3 mg/L Health; also the infant short-term level (EPA, 2004)

Manganese is mostly a private-well issue: the USGS found about 7% of US domestic wells above 0.3 mg/L, and North Carolina found 15 to 24% of wells above 0.05 mg/L, depending on region. Wisconsin advises using another water source for infant formula at 300 µg/L (0.3 mg/L) or more, and says bathing and washing dishes are fine. More in our manganese guide.

What should you test before choosing a treatment?

  • Manganese and iron: most methods are rated for combined iron plus manganese (Penn State).
  • pH: dissolved iron and manganese are most common in groundwater with pH below 7.0, and every oxidizing method has a pH minimum (Penn State).
  • Hardness: decides whether a softener can do double duty.
  • Before and after: Health Canada advises well owners to test both raw and treated water (Health Canada). Use a state-accredited lab, or a mail-in test such as the Tap Score Advanced.

What removes manganese from water?

Method Best for pH and limits
Water softener Small amounts of dissolved manganese, with hardness (Penn State) pH above 6.7; air or chlorine upstream fouls the resin; check the maker’s iron and manganese limits
Manganese greensand Combined iron and manganese of 3 to 10 mg/L (Penn State) pH about 6.8 to 7.0 or higher (NDSU); regenerated with potassium permanganate, which is toxic
Birm Iron, with manganese removal that Penn State calls “highly variable” pH 7.5 or higher for manganese, 6.8 for iron
Chemical oxidation plus filter Combined iron and manganese above 10 mg/L Chlorine works best near pH 8.5 for manganese, with about 20 minutes of contact (NDSU); can form byproducts
Aeration (air injection) Iron and some manganese Needs a filter afterwards and disinfection to prevent bacterial growth (Penn State)
Point-of-use RO Drinking, cooking, and formula water (WHO) One tap only; doesn’t stop staining elsewhere

Polyphosphate, sometimes sold for iron, is generally ineffective for manganese and doesn’t remove the metal, according to Penn State.

Are filters certified for manganese?

Rarely, so check the listing. NSF/ANSI 42 includes a manganese reduction claim for taste and staining (NSF), and WQA certifies softeners and filters that remove manganese down to 0.05 mg/L. NSF/ANSI 53, the health standard, hasn’t traditionally included manganese. SpringWell rates its well water system for manganese up to 1 ppm, but that’s the maker’s own figure; no certifier lists it. See our SpringWell well water review.

What’s the best option for drinking water?

If you mainly need safe drinking and formula water, point-of-use reverse osmosis at the kitchen tap is the simplest route, and the WHO rates it the most effective household option. The systems below are certified by their certifiers for other contaminants; none has a manganese claim on its listing, so test the treated water.

Common questions

Is manganese in well water dangerous?

At low levels it’s mainly a staining and taste problem; the EPA’s aesthetic limit is 0.05 mg/L. For health, the WHO’s provisional guideline is 0.08 mg/L, set to protect bottle-fed infants (WHO).

Will a water softener remove manganese?

Often, for small amounts of dissolved manganese, if the pH is above 6.7 and the water isn’t oxidized before the softener (Penn State).

What is the best way to remove manganese from well water?

It depends on your results: a softener for small amounts, greensand for combined iron and manganese of 3 to 10 mg/L, chemical oxidation and filtration above 10 mg/L, plus point-of-use RO for drinking water.

Does a Brita or carbon filter remove manganese?

Not unless it’s certified for manganese reduction. Check the listing; most pitcher filters have no manganese claim.

Can I boil manganese out of water?

No. Boiling evaporates water and leaves the manganese behind, slightly more concentrated.
