Is yellow water safe to drink?
Discoloration from main sediment is usually a nuisance: Portsmouth’s water division says there are no health risks from this type of problem, and utilities issue a boil water alert when water isn’t safe (North Brunswick). The EPA’s limits for iron (0.3 mg/L), manganese (0.05 mg/L), and color (15 units) are for taste and staining and aren’t enforced (EPA). Manganese is the one to watch for health: the EPA’s advisory is 0.3 mg/L, a level it applies even short term for infants under 6 months, and New Hampshire advises that infants under 12 months shouldn’t have water above 0.3 mg/L for more than 10 days a year (NH DES). California set a 0.20 mg/L response level in 2026 (California Water Boards). If the water won’t clear, use bottled water for infant formula until you know the cause.
What should you do about yellow tap water on city water?
- Run the cold tap for 5 to 10 minutes (North Brunswick). If it doesn’t clear, wait 30 minutes to an hour and try again (Cortland, Portsmouth).
- Avoid hot water until the cold runs clear, so sediment isn’t drawn into the water heater (Middleton Water).
- Hold the laundry. Wait until the water is clear. If clothes stain, rewash with a rust remover; don’t use bleach, which will set the stains.
- Call the utility if it doesn’t clear after flushing and cleaning faucet aerators (Portsmouth).
