The short version
Which cartridge you own decides the answer, and the two most common ones are not close. The white standard filter (OB03) is certified by WQA against NSF/ANSI 42 and 53 for chlorine taste and odor, zinc, copper, cadmium, and mercury. It has no lead claim. The blue Elite filter (OB06) is certified by WQA against 42, 53, and 401, and separately by IAPMO R&T against 53 for PFOA and PFOS, giving it certified lead reduction of 99.5 percent, microplastics, and a long list of pharmaceuticals. Neither one touches fluoride, nitrate, arsenic, dissolved solids, or bacteria, and Brita says plainly that its filters are not intended to purify water.

Brita sells four filtration formats and they are certified very differently. The cartridges even look similar enough to grab the wrong one, which is the single most common mistake buyers make:

You will see it written that the standard Brita filter is certified to NSF/ANSI 42 only. That is not quite right. It does hold NSF/ANSI 53 health claims, for copper, cadmium, and mercury. What it does not hold is a lead claim, which is the one most people assume they are getting.
What the Elite Filter Actually Reduces
These are the figures from Brita’s own performance data sheet for the Elite cartridge, which is the document the certification rests on rather than the marketing copy:

The 401 list is longer than most people expect: ibuprofen, naproxen, estrone, carbamazepine, phenytoin, atenolol, meprobamate, trimethoprim, bisphenol A, nonyl phenol, DEET, linuron, metolachlor, TCEP, and TCPP. Those are trace-level compounds rather than acute hazards, but the certification is real and few pitchers under thirty dollars carry it.
Some Claims Only Apply to Certain Pitchers
This is buried in a footnote on the data sheet and it matters more than anything else on this page. The Elite cartridge’s PFOA and PFOS certification, along with the entire NSF/ANSI 401 list, is valid only in specific Brita pitcher systems: Slim and Metro (OB11), Space Saver (OB21), Ultramax Jet Black (OB24), Pacifica (OB41), Marina (OB47), Monterey (OB50), Wave (OB53), Everyday, Huron and Tahoe (OB60), and Denali (OB62).
The cartridge physically fits other Brita pitchers. The certification does not travel with it. If you own a Brita model outside that list and bought Elite filters for the forever-chemical claim, that claim was never tested in your pitcher.
Three certifiers, three different scopes. WQA certifies the Elite against 42, 53, and 401. IAPMO R&T certifies the PFOA and PFOS reduction specifically. NSF International certifies lead reduction, but for one configuration: the Pacifica pitcher (OB41) with the Elite filter. Any page that says “Brita is NSF certified” as a blanket statement is glossing over all of that.
What No Brita Filter Removes
The list of what Brita leaves in your water is short but consequential:
- Fluoride, and this is deliberate. Brita states that its filters keep a healthy level of fluoride in the water. If you want it out, you need reverse osmosis or activated alumina. See our fluoride guide.
- Nitrate and arsenic. Neither appears on any Brita certification. Both are serious on well water and both need reverse osmosis or a specialized media.
- Dissolved solids and hardness. A Brita will not soften water or move a TDS meter much, which is why it reads poorly against ZeroWater on a meter while performing better on the health contaminants that matter.
- Bacteria and viruses. Brita’s own documentation says the filter is not intended to purify water and must not be used on water that is microbiologically unsafe or of unknown quality.

Two practical constraints come from the same document. The Elite is rated for 120 gallons, roughly six months, with no more than 2 gallons a day for full efficiency. And no Brita pitcher filter should see hot water: the Elite is rated to a maximum of 85°F.
Is a Brita Enough for Your Water?
For most people on municipal water whose annual report shows nothing unusual, an Elite cartridge is a sound, cheap improvement: better taste, certified lead reduction, and the emerging-contaminant list thrown in. That is genuinely more than most pitchers at the price.
It stops being enough in three situations. If you have a lead service line or pre-1986 plumbing, the faucet mount’s 99.9 percent lead claim beats the pitcher’s, though our lead guide explains why testing comes first either way. If your concern is PFAS as a class rather than the two named compounds, no Brita covers it. And if you need fluoride, arsenic, nitrate, or dissolved solids reduced, this is the wrong tool entirely and reverse osmosis is the right one.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Brita filter remove lead?
The Elite cartridge and the faucet mount do, at 99.5 and 99.9 percent respectively, both certified under NSF/ANSI 53. The white standard cartridge does not, and carries no lead claim at all. The two pitcher cartridges look similar, so check for the blue housing and the model number OB06.
Does a Brita remove PFAS?
Only PFOA and PFOS, only on the Elite cartridge, and only in the pitcher models named on the performance data sheet. That certification comes from IAPMO R&T against NSF/ANSI 53 and shows 98.1 percent reduction. It does not cover the wider PFAS family, and the faucet mount carries no PFAS claim.
Does a Brita remove fluoride?
No, and that is by design rather than a shortcoming. Brita states its filters retain fluoride. Removing it requires reverse osmosis or activated alumina.
Why does my TDS meter barely change after filtering?
Because a Brita is not built to lower dissolved solids. It targets specific contaminants, most of which sit at parts per billion and barely register on a meter reading parts per million. A low TDS number is not the same as safe water, and a high one is not the same as unsafe.
Can I use a Brita on well water?
Not as your only treatment. Brita’s documentation says the filters are not intended to purify water and should not be used on supplies that are microbiologically unsafe or of unknown quality. Wells also commonly carry nitrate, arsenic, and iron, none of which a Brita is certified to reduce.
Is it worth paying more for the Elite over the standard filter?
Yes, on both counts that matter. It covers far more contaminants, including lead, and it lasts 120 gallons against the standard’s 40, which works out cheaper per gallon despite the higher sticker price.
