Manganese is the twelfth most abundant element in the earth’s crust, present in rock and soil almost everywhere. Groundwater dissolves it as it moves through those formations, which is why wells carry it far more often than surface water does. Concentrations depend heavily on local geology and on the chemistry of the aquifer: reducing conditions, the same low-oxygen environment that mobilizes iron and arsenic, put more manganese into solution.
Three other routes matter less often but do occur. Industrial discharges, mining, and landfill leaching add manganese in some areas. Municipal systems can accumulate manganese deposits inside distribution pipes over years and then release them when flows change, which is why a city customer with no history of discoloration can suddenly get black water. And manganese is occasionally introduced during water treatment itself, since potassium permanganate is a common oxidant.
It almost always travels with iron. If you have one, assume you may have both until a test says otherwise.
How Common Is It?
More common than its low profile suggests. Across USGS groundwater sampling from 1991 to 2010, roughly a quarter of wells surveyed exceeded the EPA’s 0.05 mg/L secondary limit, and 7 percent exceeded the 0.3 mg/L health-based screening level. In the glacial aquifer system that underlies New England, the Midwest, and parts of the Pacific Northwest, manganese exceeded its benchmark more often than any other element measured.
It is not only a private well issue. USGS analysis of groundwater used for public supply found that manganese, strontium, and molybdenum, none of them regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, potentially affect around 18 million people, and concluded that additional attention to those constituents may be warranted.
Because manganese is unregulated, a municipal water quality report may not list it at all. Utilities are not required to test for or report it the way they are for lead or nitrate. Absence from the report is not evidence of absence in the water.
The Signs in Your Home
- Black or dark brown staining on toilets, tubs, sinks, and dishwasher interiors. Iron stains orange, manganese stains black, and the two together give a muddy brown.
- Gray or blackened laundry, particularly whites, which is often the first thing people notice.
- Black specks or grit in the water, more visible after periods of low use.
- A bitter, metallic taste, distinct from iron’s blood-like flavor, and noticeably worse in tea and coffee.
- Dark sludge in toilet tanks and pipes, sometimes accompanied by manganese-related bacteria that build slime inside plumbing.
Staining begins well below any health-based number, which is a useful accident: the aesthetic limit of 0.05 mg/L is low enough that most people see manganese long before it reaches concentrations that would concern a toxicologist. The reverse case, water that tests high with no visible staining, is less common but does happen, and it is the reason testing beats observation.
What Manganese Does to Health
Manganese is genuinely essential. Adults need it, dietary deficiency is rare, and most people take in far more from food than from water. That makes the health story more nuanced than for a contaminant like lead, which has no beneficial role at all.
The concern is the nervous system, and the exposed group is infants. Bottle-fed babies drink a large volume of water relative to body weight, absorb manganese more readily than adults, excrete it less efficiently, and are undergoing rapid brain development at the same time. Formula reconstituted with tap water can therefore be a major share of an infant’s total intake. Health Canada built its entire 0.12 mg/L guideline around that group, and advises using an alternate source such as bottled water for formula when tap water exceeds it.
The evidence that moved the guidelines came largely from studies of school-age children. The most cited, published in Environmental Health Perspectives in 2011, examined 362 children aged 6 to 13 in Quebec communities supplied by groundwater and found that higher manganese in tap water was associated with lower IQ scores, with an average gap of around six points between the highest and lowest exposure groups, at concentrations below the guidelines in force at the time. Later work by the same group in New Brunswick found similar associations. These are cross-sectional studies with the limitations that implies, and critics have argued that broader nutritional status was not fully controlled for, but the pattern has been consistent enough across multiple countries to shift regulatory thinking.
If you prepare infant formula with tap water and have not tested it, test it. This is the one scenario where manganese moves from a laundry problem to a health decision. Boiling does not help and actively hurts, since evaporation concentrates what is already there. Until you have a number, use bottled or reverse-osmosis water for formula.
For healthy adults and older children, short-term exposure modestly above the guidelines is unlikely to cause harm, since the guidelines were calculated around the most sensitive group. A separate and much more severe condition, manganism, is an occupational disease from inhaling manganese fumes in welding and mining, and it is not what happens to people drinking well water.

The practical reading: 0.05 mg/L is where your house starts to suffer, 0.12 mg/L is the most current health-based figure available, and anything above 0.3 mg/L deserves treatment regardless of who is drinking it.
How to Test for Manganese
Staining is a strong hint, not proof. Black marks can also come from manganese bacteria, from mold in a fixture, or from a failing rubber component, and iron and manganese together confuse the picture further.
On a private well, order a lab panel that reports manganese, iron, pH, and hardness together. Those four numbers determine both whether you have a problem and which treatment can solve it, and pH in particular decides more than most people expect. On municipal water, check your annual report first, then call the utility and ask directly, since manganese is unregulated and may simply not appear. Utilities that know they have periodic manganese releases usually track it internally.
Test again after any well work, after a change in the water’s appearance, and any time a new baby is joining the household.
How Manganese Is Removed
Manganese is harder to remove than iron, mainly because it needs a higher pH to oxidize and because the two main approaches want opposite conditions: ion exchange needs it dissolved, filtration needs it precipitated. In brief:
- Water softener, for low levels of dissolved manganese, with pH around 6.8 or above.
- Oxidizing filter, greensand or air injection, for the usual residential range, generally wanting pH above 8 for manganese specifically.
- Chemical feed with a contact tank and filtration, where combined iron and manganese runs high.
- Reverse osmosis at one tap, for drinking, cooking, and formula, which is the fastest thing you can do while planning the rest.
