Mold in Your Brita Filter: What It Is and How to Fix It

Pink film in a Brita is not mold, and the reason it keeps coming back is that the filter removed the chlorine holding it in check. How to tell the three culprits apart and clean the pitcher so it stays clean.

The short version

What you are looking at is probably one of three things, and only one of them is mold. A pink or orange film is Serratia marcescens, an airborne bacterium that settles on damp surfaces and has nothing to do with your water supply. Tiny black specks are usually loose carbon from the cartridge. Fuzzy black or green growth in the lid seams and reservoir corners is genuine mold. All three come back for the same reason: your filter removes the chlorine that was suppressing growth, and then the water sits in a warm plastic jug. Disassemble, wash with soap, treat with vinegar, dry completely, and keep it in the fridge. If the cartridge itself is colonized, replace it, because it cannot be cleaned.

Three Different Things, Three Different Answers

People call all of it mold. Telling them apart changes what you do about it:

The pink one causes the most alarm and deserves the least. Serratia is common worldwide, travels through air rather than water, and feeds on soap residue and other films on wet surfaces. Water utilities field this question constantly about toilets, showers, and pet bowls. It is not evidence of anything wrong with your supply.

The mechanism

Why Filtered Water Grows Things Faster

This is the part almost nobody explains, and it is the reason your pitcher grows a film while the tap it was filled from does not.

Municipal water carries a chlorine residual specifically so that bacteria cannot re-establish between the treatment plant and your glass. An activated carbon filter is designed to strip that chlorine out, and it is good at it: Brita’s Elite cartridge is certified at 97.4 percent chlorine reduction. That is exactly what you bought it for, and it is also what removes the only thing suppressing growth in the jug.

Now add the conditions. Standing water, room temperature if the pitcher lives on the counter, air introduced every time you refill, and organic traces from hands and dust. Water utilities note that this pattern shows up more often in homes running carbon filtration for exactly this reason.

The filter media is protected. The jug is not. Brita’s Elite cartridge contains silver to support the hygiene of the filter itself, with a trace amount transferring to the water at levels below World Health Organization guidelines. That protects the media. It does nothing for the reservoir, lid, and spout, which is where the growth you are looking at actually lives.

One line from Brita’s own documentation is worth taking seriously here: these filters are not intended to purify water, and should not be used on water that is microbiologically unsafe or of unknown quality. A pitcher filter is a taste and contaminant device, not a disinfection device.

The fix

How to Clean It Properly

Half measures are why it keeps coming back. Every damp surface needs to be reached, and everything needs to be bone dry before it goes back together:

  • Take it fully apart. Empty it, remove the cartridge, and separate the lid, reservoir, and jug. Growth hides in the seams and under the lid rim, not in the open middle where you can see it.
  • Wash with mild dish soap and warm water. Use a soft sponge or a bottle brush for the corners. Friction does most of the work here.
  • Treat what is left with vinegar. A teaspoon of white vinegar per cup of water handles light film. For stubborn patches go up to a one-to-one solution and let it sit rather than scrubbing harder.
  • Skip the dishwasher unless your model says otherwise. Dishwasher tolerance varies by Brita model and the heat can warp the plastic. If the manual does not explicitly clear it, hand wash.
  • Never use abrasives. Scouring pads leave scratches, and bacteria colonize scratches readily. An abrasively cleaned pitcher gets dirty faster every time.
  • Air dry upside down, completely. Reassembling damp parts recreates the problem within days. This step matters as much as the washing.

Never mix bleach and vinegar. Combining chlorine bleach with any acid releases chlorine gas. If you prefer a dilute bleach solution for disinfecting, use it on its own, rinse thoroughly with plain water, and do not follow it with a vinegar step until everything has been rinsed clean.

The part people get wrong

You Cannot Clean the Cartridge

Plenty of advice online walks you through spraying vinegar or bleach onto a moldy filter. Do not. You cannot reach inside the media, you cannot verify the result, and the cleaning agents themselves interfere with what the cartridge is meant to do. Chlorine bleach is the exact thing activated carbon is designed to absorb, and vinegar does nothing useful to an ion exchange resin.

If the cartridge shows growth, it is finished. Replace it and clean the pitcher around it. The same applies to a filter that has sat dry for weeks, or one that is past its rated life: 120 gallons or about six months for the Elite, 40 gallons or about two months for the standard white cartridge.

A cracked or heavily scratched pitcher is worth replacing too. Once the plastic surface is compromised, growth returns faster than cleaning can keep up with.

Keeping it clean

Stop It Coming Back

  • Keep it in the fridge. Cold slows everything down. A pitcher living on a warm counter is the single biggest contributor.
  • Empty it, do not top it up. Refilling over old water keeps a permanent reservoir of established growth. Use what is in it, then refill.
  • Wash weekly. A quick soap wash before anything is visible is far easier than a vinegar rescue afterwards.
  • Do not leave it standing while you are away. Empty, wash, dry, and store it apart. Coming home to a week-old half-full pitcher is how most of these start.
  • Never put hot water through it. Brita rates the Elite pitcher filter to a maximum of 85°F. Hot water damages the media and does not sanitize anything.
  • Replace filters on schedule. An overdue cartridge is a wet organic surface that has stopped doing its job.

If you have cleaned it properly twice and it keeps returning, the format is the problem rather than your habits. A faucet mount or an under-sink filter has no reservoir at all: water passes through and comes out, with nothing standing anywhere for a bacterium to colonize.

Is it dangerous if I drank from a moldy Brita?

For most healthy people, an occasional exposure to household mold or Serratia in drinking water is unlikely to cause harm, and Serratia in particular is not associated with waterborne illness. The picture is different for infants, the elderly, and anyone immunocompromised, where any bacterial exposure deserves more caution. If you feel unwell after drinking from a contaminated pitcher, speak to a doctor rather than an internet page.

What is the pink stuff in my Brita?

Almost certainly Serratia marcescens, a bacterium that travels through air rather than water and forms a pink to reddish film on damp surfaces. It is the same thing that appears in toilet bowls, shower corners, and pet bowls. No filter will stop it arriving, because it is not coming from your water. Cleaning and drying is the whole answer.

Can I put my Brita pitcher in the dishwasher?

It depends entirely on the model, and the manual is the only authority worth trusting. Dishwasher heat can warp pitcher plastic, and a warped lid seal creates exactly the crevices growth likes. When in doubt, hand wash. Never put the cartridge in a dishwasher under any circumstances.

Should I clean the filter itself with vinegar or bleach?

No. You cannot reach the inside of the media, you cannot confirm the result, and both agents interfere with how the cartridge works. Carbon absorbs chlorine by design, so bleaching a filter partly spends it. A cartridge with visible growth should be replaced.

Does keeping the pitcher in the fridge really matter?

Yes, more than any other single habit. Filtered water has lost its chlorine residual, so temperature becomes the main brake on growth. A pitcher on a warm counter and the same pitcher in the fridge behave very differently over a week.

Why does this happen faster with filtered water than tap water?

Because the filter did its job. Carbon removes the chlorine that municipal systems add specifically to stop bacteria re-establishing in the pipes.
