Buy the AquaTru for certified breadth. It carries roughly twice as many certified claims across three standards, including PFOA and PFOS, arsenic, nitrate and microplastics, and it needs no plumbing at all.
Buy the Waterdrop G3P800 if you want reverse osmosis on tap for a whole household. It is certified for lead, fluoride, cadmium, barium and radium, and it produces around 831 gallons a day against AquaTru’s 35 to 54. It costs about twice as much and needs installing under the sink.
Same certifier, same standard, very different claim lists
Both systems are certified by IAPMO R&T under NSF/ANSI 58, the reverse osmosis standard. Both can accurately say “IAPMO certified to NSF/ANSI 58.” That phrase covers twelve claims on one and six on the other.
NSF/ANSI 58 works as a menu. A manufacturer chooses which contaminants to certify against and pays to have each verified, so two systems can hold the same certification and cover very different ground. Reading the standard number tells you which test was applied. Reading the reduction claims tells you what was actually verified.
Waterdrop’s own range illustrates this better than anything. Its certificate covers roughly eighty models. The G3P800 and G3P600 carry six claims each. The G3-W carries five. Every other model on the file, including the entire X-series and RG-series, is certified for TDS and nothing else. So a shopper comparing two Waterdrop systems, both truthfully described as IAPMO certified, could be choosing between six health claims and one.

Throughput, and being plumbed in
The G3P800 produces around 831 gallons a day. AquaTru’s countertop models produce 35 to 54. That is not a marginal difference, it is a different category of appliance.
In practice the Waterdrop behaves like a tap: you turn it on and filtered water comes out at roughly half a gallon a minute, with no reservoir to refill and no waiting. AquaTru fills a tank, and for a household of four that means running it several times a day. If you cook with filtered water, fill bottles, or have more than a couple of people in the house, that difference will shape your day more than any certification line.
The G3P800 is also certified for cadmium, which does not appear on any AquaTru certificate we found. Small, but real.
The costs are installation and price. It plumbs in under the sink and needs a dedicated tap, which is either a small job or a plumber depending on your kitchen, and at $849.00 it is roughly twice the Carafe.
Certified breadth, across three standards
AquaTru holds four certificates. Beyond the reverse osmosis claims both share, it adds arsenic, nitrate, cyst, chromium, copper, selenium and perchlorate under NSF/ANSI 58, with uranium on the ATU200 under-sink model.
It then adds two more standards the Waterdrop does not hold at all. Under NSF/ANSI 53 it is certified for PFOA and PFOS and the VOC elective claim, which covers roughly fifty named organic compounds. Under NSF/ANSI 401 it is certified for microplastics and fifteen pharmaceuticals and industrial compounds.

And it needs no plumbing. For renters, or anyone who does not want to touch their under-sink cabinet, that is often the whole argument.
Not all Waterdrop systems are certified the same
This matters if you are shopping the wider range rather than the G3P800 specifically. Waterdrop’s IAPMO certificate covers around eighty reverse osmosis models, and the claim lists vary enormously.
The G3P800 and G3P600 carry six claims. The G3-W carries TDS, fluoride, cadmium, hexavalent chromium and selenium. Every other model we could see, the X8, X10, X12, X14, X16, the RG-series, the G5P500 and G5P700, is certified for TDS alone.
TDS is total dissolved solids, a measure of everything dissolved in the water rather than a health contaminant in itself. A system certified only for TDS has had no lead, fluoride or arsenic claim verified by anyone. All of those models can still be described as IAPMO certified to NSF/ANSI 58, and that description would be accurate.
So if you are comparing Waterdrop models, check which one you are buying against the certificate rather than assuming the brand’s certification carries across the range. Our G3P800 review covers the model in detail.
Which one should you buy?
AquaTru
Buy this if you want the widest certified claim set, or if PFAS or microplastics are on your list, or if you cannot or would rather not plumb something in. Around thirty certified claims across four certificates is more than anything else in this price range.
The trade-off is throughput. The Carafe is the AT100 family at 300 gallons of filter life and the Classic is the AT2000 family at 600, but both fill a tank rather than running on demand. Reviews of the Carafe and the Classic.
Waterdrop G3P800
Buy this if you want filtered water on demand for a whole household. Around 831 gallons a day is roughly fifteen times AquaTru’s output, there is no reservoir to refill, and it clears the counter entirely. Lead and fluoride are both certified, which covers what most water reports flag.
Two things it does not do. There is no PFAS claim and no microplastics claim on any Waterdrop certificate we could find, so if either is your reason for filtering this is not the system. And it needs plumbing in with a dedicated tap.
Common questions
Is AquaTru or Waterdrop better?
AquaTru holds around thirty certified claims across four certificates and three standards; the Waterdrop G3P800 holds six under one. On certified breadth AquaTru wins clearly. On throughput the Waterdrop wins just as clearly, at roughly 831 gallons a day against 35 to 54. Which matters more depends on your household size and what your water report says.
Does the Waterdrop G3P800 remove PFAS?
Not with certification. No Waterdrop system carries a PFAS claim on any certificate we could find, in the NSF or IAPMO databases. Reverse osmosis membranes generally reject PFAS, but NSF/ANSI 58 contains no PFAS claim at all, so a maker has to take out a separate NSF/ANSI 53 certification to make one. AquaTru has; Waterdrop has not.
Are all Waterdrop reverse osmosis systems certified the same?
No, and the differences are large. The G3P800 and G3P600 carry six claims including lead and fluoride. The X-series, RG-series, G5P500 and G5P700 are certified for TDS only. All of them can accurately be described as IAPMO certified to NSF/ANSI 58, so check the specific model against the certificate.
Why does the Waterdrop cost more than the AquaTru?
It is a plumbed-in tankless system rated at around 831 gallons a day, which is a different class of hardware from a countertop unit that fills a tank. You are paying for throughput and permanence rather than for certified claims, where AquaTru is well ahead.
Who actually certifies Waterdrop?
IAPMO R&T, under certificates held by Qingdao Ecopure Filter Co., the Chinese manufacturer that produces Waterdrop’s filters. That is why a search of Waterdrop’s own name in some databases returns nothing for its reverse osmosis line: the certificates are filed under the manufacturer rather than the brand.
