A $375 countertop system against a $35 pitcher. Brita is certified for far more than most people assume, including an NSF/ANSI 401 list identical to AquaTru’s. What separates them is PFAS, fluoride and filter life.

Buy the AquaTru if PFAS, fluoride, arsenic or nitrate appear on your water report, or if you want a filter that lasts months rather than weeks. It is certified for all of those and Brita is not.
Keep the Brita if your concerns are lead, chlorine, taste, pharmaceuticals or microplastics. It is certified for all of them, its NSF/ANSI 401 list is identical to AquaTru’s, and it costs a tenth as much. This is a closer contest than the price gap suggests.
Neither one is NSF certified, and both are certified
This trips up almost everyone. AquaTru is certified by IAPMO R&T. Brita’s pitcher filters are certified by WQA. Neither appears in NSF International’s database for most of its claims, and neither is worse for it.
NSF International, IAPMO R&T and WQA are three separate accredited certification bodies, and all three certify products against the NSF/ANSI standards. The standard is the yardstick; the body is who measures against it. So “NSF/ANSI 53 certified” tells you which test was applied, and the certifier’s name tells you who applied it.
We nearly got this wrong ourselves. A search of NSF’s database returns just two records for Brita, both for lead. Brita’s full claim set, nineteen contaminants under NSF/ANSI 53 and sixteen more under 401, sits with WQA. Searching one database and concluding a product is uncertified is the single most common mistake in this category.

On pharmaceuticals and microplastics, they are the same
Both hold NSF/ANSI 401 certification, and the claim lists match compound for compound: atenolol, bisphenol A, carbamazepine, DEET, estrone, ibuprofen, linuron, meprobamate, metolachlor, naproxen, nonylphenol, phenytoin, TCEP, TCPP, trimethoprim and microplastics.
Sixteen claims each, from two different certification bodies, on products separated by a factor of ten in price. If pharmaceutical residues or microplastics are what worry you, the $35 pitcher is certified to do exactly what the $375 countertop system is certified to do.

Where AquaTru pulls ahead
Three things, and they are the reason to spend the money.
PFAS
AquaTru is certified for PFOA and PFOS under NSF/ANSI 53. No Brita listing carries any PFAS claim, in any database. If your utility has reported PFAS, or you live near a known source, this alone settles it. Our PFAS filter guide covers the wider field.
The reverse osmosis claims
Fluoride, arsenic, nitrate, TDS, radium, perchlorate, selenium and barium all sit on AquaTru’s NSF/ANSI 58 certificate, and the ATU200 under-sink model adds uranium. Those are reverse osmosis claims; a carbon pitcher cannot make them, and Brita does not. If your water comes from a well, or your report flags nitrate or arsenic, that is decisive.
Filter life
AquaTru is certified to 300 gallons on the Carafe and 600 on the Classic. Brita’s Elite filter is certified to 120 gallons, and the Standard to 40. For a household drinking two gallons a day, that is roughly ten months against two, or three weeks on the Standard filter.
What the pitcher does that the countertop does not
Brita’s NSF/ANSI 53 certificate names nineteen contaminants, including mercury, cadmium and asbestos, which do not appear on any AquaTru listing we could find. It also names thirteen individual pesticides and volatile organics.
AquaTru covers most of that ground differently. Its NSF/ANSI 53 certificate carries the elective VOC claim, which under that standard means the product reduces a list of roughly fifty named compounds including atrazine, benzene, toluene and 2,4-D. So on organics AquaTru’s single claim is broader, even though Brita’s list looks longer.
Mercury, cadmium and asbestos are the genuine gaps. If those appear on your water report, Brita is certified for them and AquaTru is not.
Which one should you buy?
AquaTru
Buy this if your water report names PFAS, fluoride, arsenic or nitrate, or if you are tired of changing a filter every few weeks. Four certificates, around twenty certified claims, and 600 gallons on the Classic.

Brita with the Elite filter
Keep this, or buy it, if lead, chlorine, taste, pharmaceuticals or microplastics are your concerns. Brita is certified for all of them, and the 401 list is identical to AquaTru’s. For a $35 pitcher that is a genuinely strong position, and better than the brand’s reputation among filter enthusiasts suggests.
Two caveats. There is no PFAS claim anywhere on Brita’s listings, and no fluoride, arsenic or nitrate. And the Elite filter is certified to 120 gallons against the Standard filter’s 40, so make sure you are buying the Elite. Our Brita Elite review has the detail.
Should you upgrade from a Brita?
Only if your water report says so. That is a less exciting answer than most comparison pages give, and it is what the certificates support.
Get a copy of your utility’s annual water quality report, or test your water. If it flags PFAS, fluoride, arsenic, nitrate or uranium, Brita is not certified for any of them and AquaTru is. If it flags lead, chlorine, disinfection byproducts, pharmaceuticals or microplastics, your Brita with an Elite filter is already certified to handle them.
The one non-contaminant reason to upgrade is filter changes. Two months against ten is a real quality-of-life difference, and over several years the running cost gap narrows more than the sticker price suggests.
Common questions
Is AquaTru better than Brita?
For PFAS, fluoride, arsenic, nitrate and filter life, yes and clearly. For lead, chlorine, taste, pharmaceuticals and microplastics they are both certified, and Brita adds mercury, cadmium and asbestos which AquaTru does not carry. Which is better depends entirely on what is in your water.
Does Brita remove PFAS?
No Brita listing carries a PFAS claim, in the WQA, NSF or IAPMO databases. Some independent lab testing suggests partial reduction, but that is testing rather than certification. If PFAS is your concern, see our PFAS filter guide.
Is Brita NSF certified?
Brita’s pitcher filters are certified by WQA, not NSF, against the NSF/ANSI 42, 53, 401 and 372 standards. Both are accredited certification bodies working to the same standards, so the certification is genuine; it simply does not appear in NSF’s own database. NSF separately lists two Brita pitcher models for lead reduction.
Does the Brita Standard filter carry the same claims as the Elite?
No. The Elite is certified to 120 gallons and Brita states it covers around three times as many contaminants as the Standard, which is certified to 40 gallons. WQA’s listing does not break the claims down by cartridge, so if a specific contaminant matters to you, check Brita’s own performance data sheet for the filter you are buying.
Do both remove microplastics?
Yes, both are certified for microplastics under NSF/ANSI 401, AquaTru by IAPMO R&T and Brita by WQA. Brita is the only pitcher we found anywhere with the claim. See our microplastics guide.
