Certified by IAPMO R&T for lead, fluoride, arsenic, nitrate, PFOA/PFOS and more, in a countertop unit with no plumbing and a larger tank than the Carafe.
The catch: It needs an outlet and counter space, and filters cost about $130 a year.

Our verdict
The AquaTru Classic is a countertop reverse osmosis system. You fill a 1-gallon tank from the tap, and it filters into a separate tank that holds about three quarts, ready to pour. There’s nothing to plumb in: it needs a counter and an outlet. AquaTru says a gallon takes 10 to 15 minutes.
Its certified claim list is long. IAPMO R&T certifies the Classic (models AT2000 to AT2050) to NSF/ANSI 58 for lead, fluoride, arsenic, nitrate and nitrite, perchlorate, dissolved solids, barium, chromium, copper, radium, selenium and cysts; to NSF/ANSI 53 for PFOA, PFOS and VOCs; to NSF/ANSI 42 for chlorine and chloramine; and to NSF/ANSI 401 for 15 compounds and microplastics. That’s the same set of standards as the smaller AquaTru Carafe, under its own model listings. Our NSF certification guide explains how to check a certifier’s listing yourself.
The trade-offs are the usual ones for reverse osmosis. It removes minerals, so some people find the water tastes flat. It needs counter space and power. And it uses three filters on different schedules, which comes to about $130 a year at AquaTru’s prices.
You want certified lead, fluoride and PFAS reduction with no installation, and you drink more than the Carafe’s half gallon at a time.
You’re short on counter space, or you want unlimited filtered water from a faucet.
How it scored
Contaminant reduction carries the most weight in the overall score. How we score filters
What it removes
Every row below is certified by IAPMO R&T for the Classic. Reduction figures are from AquaTru’s performance data sheet.
| Contaminant | Classic (average) | Certified to |
|---|---|---|
| Lead | 99.1% | NSF/ANSI 58 |
| Fluoride | 93.5% | NSF/ANSI 58 |
| Arsenic Vat or below 50 ppb | 98.0% | NSF/ANSI 58 |
| Nitrate / nitrite | 89.9% | NSF/ANSI 58 |
| PFOA / PFOS | 97.5% minimum | NSF/ANSI 53 |
| Chromium, copper, barium, radium, selenium | Reduced | NSF/ANSI 58 |
| VOCs | Reduced | NSF/ANSI 53 |
| Chlorine, chloramine | Reduced | NSF/ANSI 42 |
| Microplastics, 15 pharmaceuticals and chemicals | Reduced | NSF/ANSI 401 |
IAPMO R&T files W-10188, W-10193, W-10194 and W-10195 list models AT2000 to AT2050 with the AT2001 pre/carbon, AT2002 RO and AT2003/AT2004 VOC filters, at 600 gallons for the carbon filters and 54 gallons a day for the RO stage. All were active on 7 October 2026. The arsenic claim applies to water at or below 50 ppb of arsenic V.
What it costs to run
At AquaTru’s prices, the pre/carbon filter (AT2001) is $29.95 every 6 months or 600 gallons, the VOC filter (AT2003) is $39.95 every 12 months or 600 gallons, and the RO filter (AT2002) is $59.95 every 24 months or 1,200 gallons. That’s about $130 a year. AquaTru rates the system at 75% efficiency, so about 3 parts filtered water for every 1 part that goes back to the tap tank as waste.

Common questions
Is the AquaTru Classic certified?
Yes, by IAPMO R&T, to NSF/ANSI 42, 53, 58 and 401, for models AT2000 to AT2050. All four listings were active on 7 October 2026.
Classic or Carafe?
Both are certified to the same four standards for lead, fluoride, PFOA/PFOS and more, under separate model listings. The Classic has bigger tanks and makes about a gallon a batch; the Carafe is smaller and makes half a gallon at a time into a glass carafe. Their filters aren’t interchangeable.
Does it remove PFAS?
It’s certified under NSF/ANSI 53 for PFOA and PFOS, with a minimum reduction of 97.5% on AquaTru’s data sheet. It isn’t certified for Total PFAS. See our PFAS guide.
Does it remove fluoride?
Yes. Fluoride is certified under NSF/ANSI 58, at 93.5% average reduction. See our fluoride guide.
Does it need installing?
No. It sits on the counter and plugs in. You fill the tap tank by hand.
The bottom line
Buy the AquaTru Classic if you want certified lead, fluoride and PFAS reduction without touching your plumbing, and you need more than the Carafe’s half gallon at a time. If counter space is tight, the Carafe covers the same standards in a smaller unit, and if you own your home, the Waterdrop G3P800 gives unlimited certified RO water from its own faucet. Compare them in our countertop guide.
