The same certified RO water in a larger unit with bigger tanks, for households that go through a lot of water each day.
Jump to pick ›Big Berkey
A gravity filter that needs no electricity, handy for off-grid living and emergencies. It’s uncertified, though, so for verified removal we’d pick the AquaTru.
Jump to pick ›A countertop filter gives you strong filtration with zero plumbing: it sits on the counter and you either fill it or plug it in. Two very different kinds dominate. Countertop reverse osmosis (AquaTru) is independently certified and removes the most, but needs a power outlet. Gravity filters (Berkey) need no electricity and travel well, but aren’t independently certified. Our picks are above; the full field is below.
How they compare
Every countertop filter we’ve reviewed, ranked by our overall 5-point score. The real split is certified reverse osmosis versus uncertified gravity: only the AquaTru systems carry independent certification for PFAS, lead, and fluoride.

Cert = independently certified for it · Tested = the maker’s own lab testing, not third-party certified · No = not designed for it (Berkey needs separate PF-2 add-on filters to reduce fluoride). The AquaTru systems are IAPMO-certified countertop RO; the Berkeys are uncertified gravity filters. Scores are on our 5-point scale; see how we rank. Prices are typical street price and move often.

AquaTru Carafe
Our highest-rated filter of any kind. A countertop RO that just needs a power outlet, IAPMO-certified to NSF/ANSI 53 and 58 for the widest range we’ve seen, PFAS, lead, fluoride, chromium-6, and arsenic included. Compact tanks make it best for one or two people.
AquaTru Classic
The same certified RO water as the Carafe in a bigger unit with larger tanks, the pick if you go through a lot of water each day. A larger footprint and plainer build are the only reasons it lands just below the Carafe; the water is identical.
Big Berkey
The popular 2.25-gallon gravity filter: no power, no plumbing, just pour water in the top. That makes it a genuine option for off-grid use and emergencies. The honest catch is that it carries no NSF certification, its removal claims are self-tested, and counterfeits are common, so for verified PFAS, lead, and fluoride removal we’d choose the certified AquaTru.
Travel Berkey
The smaller 1.5-gallon Berkey for travel, RVs, and one-to-three-person homes, with the same elements and the same uncertified status as the Big Berkey, so it scores the same. Great when you need filtered water with no power, but the same certification and authenticity caveats apply.
How to choose a countertop filter
Countertop filters need no plumbing, so the real decision is the technology: certified reverse osmosis or no-power gravity. What’s in your water, and whether you have an outlet to spare, points you to one or the other.
Reverse osmosis or gravity?
Countertop RO like the AquaTru removes the most and is independently certified, but it needs a power outlet and sends a little water to a drain cup. Gravity filters like the Berkey need no electricity and travel anywhere, which suits off-grid and emergency use, but they aren’t third-party certified.
Why certification matters here
For lead, PFAS, and fluoride, an independent NSF/ANSI certification is your assurance the filter actually does what it claims. The AquaTru systems carry that; gravity filters rely on the maker’s own testing. If verified removal of a specific contaminant is the goal, certified is the safer bet.

Common questions
What’s the best countertop water filter?
For most people, the AquaTru Carafe is our top pick: a countertop reverse-osmosis system that needs no plumbing and carries the widest independent certification we’ve seen, including PFAS, lead, and fluoride. Larger households can step up to the AquaTru Classic. If you need filtered water with no electricity, the Big Berkey gravity filter is the off-grid option, though it isn’t certified.
Countertop reverse osmosis or a Berkey gravity filter?
Choose countertop RO (AquaTru) if you want the widest, independently certified removal and have a power outlet to spare; it’s the stronger, verified filter. Choose a gravity filter (Berkey) if you specifically need filtered water without electricity, for off-grid living, travel, or emergencies, and accept that its removal is self-tested rather than certified. For everyday home use where you have power, we’d take the certified RO.
Do countertop filters remove fluoride, PFAS, and lead?
The certified ones do. The AquaTru systems are IAPMO-certified to reduce PFAS, lead, and fluoride, among 80-plus contaminants. Gravity filters are different: Berkey’s standard elements are self-tested for lead and PFAS but not certified, and they do not reduce fluoride unless you add separate PF-2 fluoride filters. If fluoride or PFAS removal is your goal, a certified RO system is the surer route. See our PFAS and fluoride guides.
Do countertop filters need any plumbing or installation?
No, that’s the appeal. A countertop RO system like the AquaTru just needs a power outlet and a spot on the counter; you fill its tank and it does the rest, no drilling or plumbing. Gravity filters need nothing at all beyond somewhere to sit. Both are ideal for renters or anyone who doesn’t want to modify their kitchen.
Are Berkey filters certified, and are they worth it?
Berkey filters are not NSF/ANSI certified; the company publishes its own lab testing instead, and because the brand is widely counterfeited, authenticity is a real concern. They’re genuinely useful where you need filtered water without power, but for certified removal of lead, PFAS, or fluoride at home we’d point you to the certified AquaTru Carafe instead. Our Big Berkey review covers the details honestly.
